How it has occurred that the political sentiments of j landing the troops from the Alabama, inside the bay.
Republican Georgians have seemingly undergone 1 There are now five hundred men encamped here,
such a vast change, is a question for their serious
consideration. If the matter is impartially consider
ed, they will find that in sticking to party, they have
deserted their principles, which to patriots are dear
as life itself. The truo point at isaue “in the
conflict” is as McAllister properly expresses it,
whether Georgia should bo placed “ side by side
with Republican Virginia or locked in the unnatural
embrace of Federal Massachusetts,” or in other
words, will Georgia prove true to her first love,
Republicanism, or in this latter day bo consigned to
Federalism ? Tho whigs know this to be the issue,
therefore they evade the point. The democrats of
Georgia “ in tlie coming conflict,” have selected as
their “ Standarod Bearer,” Matthiw Hall McAl
lister, of the county of Chatham, whom the whigs
can And nothing against, save that which they utter
to tho perversion of truth. Party rancour, party
malice, personal envy and “ base misrepresentation”
in the absence of good objections, have become the
mode of warfare. It is not among those who know
Mr. McAllister that such aspersions as have been
cast upon him, enn injure him. But it is among
those who, looking to the “papers” for political
truths, they arc deceived with regard to the true
character of this estimable man An Aristocrat!
The man who knows AI. Hall McAllister, and would
utter such an expression, the blush of shame would
mount to his cheek, unless it be by somo man whom
ho lias taken to his bosom, and who now stabs the
reputation of his friend, for 1 apprehend there are
someauch characters.—.In enemy to free suffrage!
What act of hia gives rise to this charge ? Because
he would not consent to trouble the people with
voting upon a question, when they had already elect
ed their representatives upon all such questions of
ordinary legislation ? If this constitutes a man, an
enemy to free suffrage,—who shall escape the
charge? Is William C. Dawson politically dis
honest? He that is not morally dishonest will not be
politically so; and < wcro it not lor violating tho
tity of private lifej we could tell of a truly noble act
of tbis man, which would endoar him to every hon
est man throughout Georgia’s length and breadth;
an act which I apprehend has been of benefit to
some who now traduce him.
Georgians! M. Hall McAllister ia a Republican
of the old school. You have only to know him to
love him. The first Monday in October next, march
to the ballot box and sustain him—shewing by your
votes that you had rather see Georgia stand “side by
■ido with Republican Virginia” than to be “ locked
in the unnatural embrace of Federal Massachu
setts.” OGLETHORPE.
