A muzzled press and an oppressed people
must always go together. In this country where
we have been accustomed to think and^ay what we
pleased for upwards of eighty years, we cannot now
call-life* or liberty ours, if we dare »o speaa in de
fence of those principles which havebecn heretofore
known as the pillars of the Government. Struck to
the dost as the people of the South are. why should
a government like the United States fear what they
may »ay !• Did we not surrender our arras and ac
cept certain terms, which, wc are sorry lossy, have
not been wholly respected ! Did not the South wit"
ness $2,500,000,000 worth of property torn from
her at one fell swoop, and having quietly with-
teod this, can she be dragged into a second war
by a few newspapers, or a few dissatisfied men ?—
No, certainly not. Then why should certain officials
a perverted press, a faction of cowardly fanatics,
seek to lower yer people, not only in the world's
estimation, but even in their own! Is it not un
manly to strike a fallen foe! Is k not cowardly to
force a bmye people 1o bea^more than the most ab
ject have ever been required to submit to? Such at
least has always been onr opinion, and it matters
little in the abstract, whether these interrogatories
come from a Southern man or a Northern man, os
they can be answered only in one way and by
course of reasoning, lfmijkt makes right, the South
should not complain; but it does not, nor never has
among civilized nations. The law* ofGod nn<J
ili«ation teach lenity and humanity towards a fallen
foe, especially when that foe is of yonr own blood
nd kindred. But we dare not say all we feel about
