By JABF.Z W. HEUSTIS, M. D. Author of Physical Observations and Medical tracts and Researches on the Topography and Diseases of Louisiana. rri HR Author of the work abovemen i tioned considers that little need he said in order to set forth its interest and utility to the community at large. It is a subject it; which all are inte* rested, as well the planter as the phy sician. Fever is the principal source of mortality in the Southern States, and the annual visitor of our towns, settlements and sea-ports;ah acquain tance, therefore with its causes, its na me, prevention and cure, is among the first lessons of self-preservation. A residence of several years in the southern states, together with conside rable experience in the diseases of the climate, and the aid of study and re flection have, the writer trusts, ena bled him to treat the subject in such a manner as to be both useful and inte resting. It is nearly ten years since he turned his attention to the labor and execution of the present work; during which time, the tacts and observations that have fallen within his reach, have been carefully unproved. I'he result he is now about to give to the public. His aim has been to render the work of essential practical utility, and he has therefore avoided much of the tech nicality ot medical language, in order to adapt it to the understanding of all. To those who live at a distance from a physician, and even to others a work of this natre caanot fail to be ot im portance. Fiie work will comprise as many as 250 pg es octavo.
