important” RUMOR.
A rumor has been afloat in this
city for some days past, that Mr.
Rush had made an enquiry of our
Government, by the request of the
English Cabinet, to ascertain
whether the United States were
prepared to join England in a uni
ted resistance to any attempt of the
Holy Alliance , upon the indepen
dence of the South America Repub
lics. We confess that we are cred
ulous to believe not only this, but
that England is prepared to join us
in resisting all further attempts on
the partof the Allied Powers, to
colonize this country. They have
large possessions on this continent
to defend irom loreign aggression,
as well as the U. States. England
is jealous of Alexander’s power,
and the settlement which he has
formed on our western frontier, has
already been with the English cab
inet, a subject of remonstrance.

ROBBERY OF THE MAIL
For some weeks past, the Wes
tern Mail, due at this Post office,
has been subject to depredation.—
Some of the merchants have sus
tained losses of their remittances
from the Western country, as New
Orleans, Mobile, &c.
So crying had the complaints be
come from several quarters, that, we
understand, the Postmaster Gener
al came to the resolution to attempt
to put a stop to it. The measures
he pursued have so far proved ef
ficient.
An agent was sent on with par
ticular instructions to detect the
pilferer ; and the scheme has even
tuated in the apprehension of the
Postmaster at Newbern, Mont
gomery county. We understand
that on the 26th ult. a letter was put
into the post office by the agent at
Abingdon, addressed to a person
in this city, containing 820 in small
North Carolina Notes. The.agent
employed a countryman to call at
the post office at Newbern, to ask
for a letter, and there being none
for him to enquire ofthe postmaster
if he could give him small North
Carolina notes for two s’s as he
found it difficult to change them on
the road. The postmaster (Wolh
ford) readily gave SlO in the very
notes he had stolen from the agent’s
letter. As soon as the agent re
ceived these, he called at the office
and demanded of W. the other 810
which were found,when W. confess
ed his guilt. He was lodged in the
jail at Montgomery Courthouse
on the evening of the 29th. It
seems that nearly every double let
ter in W’s office had been broken
open—and that he had a good deal
of money in notes of various banks
in his possession.
