By JABEZ W. 11EUSTIS, M D. Author of I’hysiral Observations and Medical Tracts and Researches on the Topography anil Diseases of Louisiana. Til HE Author ofthework abovemen -l- turned considers that little need be said in order to set forth its interest and utility to the community at large. It is a subject in which all are inte rested, as well the planter as the phy sician. Fever is the principal source of mortality in the Southern States, and the annual visitor of our towns, settlements and sea-ports;an acquain tance, theretV’e with its causes, its na ture, prevention and curt*, is among the first lessons of self-preservation. A residence of several years in the southern states, together with conside rable experience in the diseases oftlie climate, and the aid of study and re flection have, the writer trusts, ena bled him to treat the subject in such a manner as to be both useful and inte resting. It is nearly ten years since he turned his attention to the labor and execution of the present work ; during which time, the facts and observations that have fallen within bis reach .have been carefully improved. The result lie is now about to give to the public. His aim has been to render the work, of essential practical utility, and he lias therefore avoided much of the tech nicality of medical language, in order to adapt it to the understanding of all. To those who live at a distance from a physician, and even to others a work of this nature cannot fail to be of im portance. 7’lie work will comprise as many as 250 pges octavo.
