THE VALLEY OF THE SEASONS.
“ These ns they change, Almighty Father,
thesp,
“ Are but the varied God ”
“ Follow me,” said the sage, “ and J
will lead thee to the valley of the Sea
sons.” I obeyed my conductor, and he
brought me to an eminence, from
whence, looking down, I beheld a vale
beautiful as Thessalian Tempe. “ Let
’us descend the hill,” said the old mar,
“ and sit down by yonder fountain; from
i thence, we shall perceive the seasons
and their attendants; listen attentively
to their songs, and I will explain to vim
the duty of each spirit, as it passes by.”
We descended to the fountain, and sit
ting down on the turfy bank, beheld
four beautiful females, each of whom
was surrounded hv many attendants—
The principal figures glided after each
other in a wreathed dance, and the svl
phic'crowd wove their mazy path among
them. “ The four chief spirits which
thou secest,” said my interpreter, “are
the geniiof the Seasons; and the others
are their messengers, which are sent
forth, each at the appointed hour, to
minister the blessings of the Highest to
all the kingdoms of the earth. “ Be
hold,” continued he, “the one whirh
advances tow ards us; she has a ehapUt
of wild flowers on her ivory brow, her
countenance is beautiful as the blush of
opening inorn, and her white garments
float chastely on the balmy gale. It is
Spring ; she soar over the mountains,
shedding her dews, and flies through tho
valley, dropping her flowers : she scat
ter-, beautiful foiiage on the forests, and
clothes the hills with verdure. She ap

SPRING.
Here in my garden, 1 fly, 1 fly.
Gathering blossom* and early flower* :
The first pale primrose 1 can f‘-pv,
And the jessamines that preps from tbft
shady bowers.
I gather them both, and fly, and fly,
Where nectarean dew distil*,
Then on the clouds of heaven 1 lie,
To water the valleys and little bill*.
Over the earth I fly, I fly,
Smiting upon the furrowed land,
The seeds burst open wherever tlirv lie.
And nature looks happy on every hard.
Unto the folds I fly. 1 fly,
To bnng forth the young of the laden datnv,
And the green fields echo as I pass by,
With the hler.tings of sheeps and the plav.
tul lambs.
Tiie genius of the Spring went fir,
and another spirit approached us, wear
ing a coronet of pearls : she held up an
urn with her two hands, and her iain
bnw'-colored wings were wet with dew.
“ This” said my guide. “ is the genius
of the Showers; she is the favorite
companion of Spring, and follows close
ly after her, sprinkling the earth at in
tervals with water from tier silver urn.”
THE GENIUS OF THE SHOWERS.
Nightly I go to the coral cell,
Where the spirits of the waters dwell,
And oft as 1 visit their ocean cave.
I hey fill me this urn from their own blm*
wave ;
Drops such as Ihese there are none—(tier*
are none
Save in that fountain stream alone.
Oh they are beautiful as they distil.
On the happy vale and the quiet hill.
At break of day my dew drops shine
On the rose, end lily, end eglantine.
The peasant goes fo.th to his work, and
beholds
All that (lie hand of Spring unfolds.
He joins the lark in his morning hymn,
And prays to that God who hath succor'd
him ;
When evening comes, he renews bis vovf
Os thanks, whin be sees the color’d how,
That arches and melts while 1 gladden the
plain
With precious drops of the early rain.
“ The spirit which new advances,”
said my companion, “is the genius of
the solt winds. She wears a crown of
seven st s. With a plume of the Os
trich she rules the gales of spring. At
her command they’ waft the seeds of
plants and flowers across the earth, and
scatter them in desert places, so that the
waste ground is glad, and flourishes.
THE GENIUS OF THE SOFT WINDS.
Swiftly over Ihe vale below,
Vy fleecy gondola glidetli,
Ami mounteth above the rocky brovr,
Where the proud eagle abidelb,
Ariel, ns I sweep along,
His (airy horn is blowing,
A white eloud is my gonfalon,
Over the valleys flowing.
When Ihe sun is nigh to Ihe west,
And the linnet is hastening home,
And the crow wings her wayto her airy neif.
To some favor'd spot of the oaith 1 uoure
By a silver river silting,
Hark to the music that roileth along,
From the skiff with w hite sails flitting,
’Tis the boatman wnging bis evening
song. ®
From Ihe lonely watch tower,
And the rustle’s turrettrd height,
There comeson the breeze of the midnight
hour,
The watchman's voice—All’s well -Gocd
night.
