Surgical. — A successful rase oftrkrr
fusion of blood recently occurred at
Shrewsbury, in England. A pioot wo
man in consequence of miscarriage, had,
from a violent hemorrhage, lccom
quite exhausted; her pulse had been
imperceptible ior about an hour and a
half: her extremities cold, and perspi
ration clammy : added to which symp
toms. her stomach was so’ irritable, us
to reject all kinds of nourishment, and
every cordial stimulant that w as offered.
At this critical moment, it occurred tci
Mr. Clement, the surgical gentleman
called in, that the only chance was tr
attempt the operation above alluded to;
and having procured a healthy stout
man, who w as willing to aid in the ope
ration, by allowing the requisite blood
to he taken from him, Mr. Chrnent
opened a vein in the arYn of each, and
by means of a patent spring and tubes,
injected about fifteen ounces of blood
into the woman’s arm. I.i the coin**
of a few hours she was perrrptibh her-,
ter. and lias since continued improving*
giving every assurance of ultimate ie

Broth of Columbus. —With all thf
fervor of his imagination, its fondest
dreams fell short of the reality. He di
ed in ignorance of the grand discovery,
I ntil his last breath he entertained tho
idea that he had merely opened anew
way to the old resorts of opulent Com

wild regions of the east. He supposed
Hispaniola to be ancient Ophir which
had been visited fey the ships of Solo

were but remote parts of Asia. Vv hat
visions ot glorv would have broke upon
his mind conlil he have known tl. ‘ •

magnanimous spirit have been Consoled,
amidst the affliction of age and the ‘••iu#
of penury, the neglect ol a tickle public,
and the injustice ot an ungrateful king,
could he have anticipated the splendid
empires which were spread over tha
beautiful world he had discovered; and
the nations, and tongues, and languages
which were to till its lands with his ie~
