COMMUNICATED.
Messrs. Editors— As it has again become your pain
ful duty to announce the recurrence of another terrible
ajccideut, occasioned by the firing of a cannon, I would
through your paper respectfully suggest to the owners
of Steam Boats, the propriety of preveuting future ac
cidents of the kind, by announcing the arrival of their
Boats by the ringing of a bell, instead of the firing of a
cannon.
Steam Boat navigation on our river was for a long
time deemed impracticable; and after one or two fruitless
efforts, was abandoned as impossible; and when at last
the seeming obstacles were overcome by the indefatiga
ble efforts and perseverance of our enterprising merchants
and we actually beheld the smoke of a Steam Boat
gradually approaching our city, it was well to proclaim
the triumph by the M cannon’s roar”—and our heurts
rejoiced iu the sound; —but now that it is not only an
“ old story,” u ith us, but as it is also associated in our i
minds with the idea of accidents and death, (three hav- j
ingbeeu killed within the last year,) may we not hops |
that the custom of other places may be henceforth a- ,
dopted, and a bell, instead of a cannou, proclaim the !
intelligence. E.
FOR THE GEORGIA MSSSXNOFR.
Messrs. Ki iTors
1 promised to give* my views respecting the kind of
trees most suitable for planting in our streets.
Tiiis I shall en..eavorto do ve f y briefly, and, I think
I can safely say, that I have-founded nn conclu
sions on due experience mid observation.
For a shade tree in exposed situations I consul- :
er the F.lm, superior to ull others, from several
reasons. Some of them are, that it is entirely liar
dy, its growth is ns rapid as almost any other of
our forest trees, and more so than a majority ol ‘
them. It is very little subject* to be injured by do- j
inestic animals, lives very easily uhen transplan- |
ted, will flourish in any soil, it- form is graceful, j
it is not subject to he broken or blown down by .
storms, arid otlen lives and flourishes for many |
generations. Some evidence, of the rapidity of!
their growth can be seen in Mulberry street, |
and a comparison of it witli other trees, which !
were planted tit the same time. r lt is a Ire- ‘
qiirnt remark, that the Elm i- ol <low growth— j
hut I challenge any one to point out a forest tree |
that lias been planted in our street-, that ha- out [
grown them more than a sixteenth.
There are three or fmr varieties of the elm in I
tliis vicinity, nil of which are well united for plant- }
ing in streets.
Next in value U the domestic Mulberry, gener
ally known by the name of •* Spanish Mulberry”— j
To is in of more rapid growth than any tree wc have,
in a go>d soil; but it is not suited to low ami wet
locations, or a very barren soil, unless it is culti-1
vateil. It is siiflicienlly hardy and durable to rank j
ns a lirst iate tree tor streets. Its roots sometimes ,
injure wells, when planted near them.

IN consideration of the high price of labor, the un
dersigned in induct'd to offer the plan# of several labor
saving machines, for the use of all who feel an interest |
in the construction and completion of Rail-Roads. The i
improvements now offered were originally intended to be
patented in the Limed States, but delayed from the in
security ot the patentee against the decisions of iudges
and juries, knowing less of the principle# of machinery
than of favoritism and politics, too often beleving an ad
ditional wheel, or a very complicated lever, or some new
form changes the principles ol the original patent; there
tore, incapable of rendering a jus) verdict on improve
ments of patents. These considerations have induced
many, after being defrauded of one patent, to either seek
th • aid of foreign governments or keep valuable discov
eries from the world. These considerations several years
since determined the subscriber not to secure n patent in
this country: thus he Ims kept within himself the
plans of ten saving labor machines, three of which are
applicable to the construction of Rail-Roads, and arc ol
ii i less importance to the stockholders of Kail-Roads,
than the Cotton Gin is to the planter.
An oiler for the first time is now made to the companies
or contractors of Rail Roads feeling disposed to remedy
tin expense and scarcity of laborer*. By appointing an
agent possessing plain practical sound sense, a general
