LATEST FROM TEXAS.
By the arrival of the schooner Henry, we are
in possession nf intelligence fiom Texas, as lale
as lire 27th inst. Extracts from the paper fol

From the Texas Telegraph.
Gen. Sam Houston. President, has returned
from the crniy, and reports it in extraordinary
health and fine spirits—the most efficient body
of men that ho has ever seen to their number.—
He thinks there are only twenty men in the ar
my over forty years old. They are improving in
discipline and military science every day. We
learn that he his directed Gen. Feiix Houston,
commanding the army, by Col. John N. Segniu,
an interment of the ashes and bones ol the im
mortal heroes, who fell at the Alamo, with all
the honors of war. Thisisriueto the bravo, and
we trust the day will come, when a monument w ill
he erected to the memory of the first martyrs ol
constitutional libery, on the spot which they per
ished, heating the inscription of their names and
deeds w hich valor alone ean demand, or the pre
sent or future generations emulate and admire.
The proud and hallowed hopes of lexis

are worthy of the Anglo Saxon race ; justice and
sternal truth will sustain them, when seconded

That in J 6 I ‘ New Amsterdam, now New YmU,

on Hie corner I Re.nl street and Coenties slip.
In 1604 the place was taken by the Bn.isli.
In 1673 it was retaken by the Dutch, and du

In 1 671 the British retook this placv.
Until 1670 the ferry boats came up Broad

In 1688 the Assessors valued the whole proper

In 1699 the population of the city w 6,000.
In 1774 it was 22.750.
In 1786 the population was 23.000 ; in 1790 it
amounted to 3.5,1.91 ; in 1800 to 60.489 ; in 1810

By reference to Bradford's map of the year
1713. it appears there were shipyards at the fool
ol Whitehall street. At that day many accomo
dations were provided for shipping in the East
Ritlr, but none in the North River, except at the
foot of Thames nod Cedar street j and Lumber
street running north anrfsoulh and west ofliroad
way had been laid out, and Frankfort and Lib

By refeience to Duyckinck's map of 1755, it is
seen (hat there was no increase of places m berths
for vessels on the North River. In 1732 the
first statje began to run between New Yoik and
Boston, and was fourteen days nn the journey.
On the etst December, 177 G. 492 houses, be
ing one eighth part of the city, were burned.
December 18, 1301, n great fire destroyed for
ty stores and dwelling houses on \\ all, Fiont and
Water streets, and property to one or two mill

In 1811 there was a great fire In Chatham

gieat fire—loss twenty millions dollars. In 17D1
the exports fiom New York to foreign ports
amounted t 5^.505.485.
A talented Knglish -Author declares that in
1835 the value of the inert h iddizu laded and un

year the number of vessels in this port, in the

Opening of the Chamber—Attempt on the
Kind's Life. —This being-the day fixed for the
opening of (lie Legislature Chambers, tha usual
preparations were made for bis Majesty's pro
ire.s to the Palais Bourbon. Bodies of military
were in attendance, as on loruier similar occa
sions ; but the severity of the weather was such,
that the ordinary crowd of spectators at the cav
alcade was diminished to a much smaller num
ber than we have previously remarked at ihiscer
emony.
Within a few- seconds of the Royal cortege
leaving the Tnilleries by the gate leading to
Point Royal, and whilst the crowd assembled on
the quay were cheering the appearance of his
Majesty, a young man rather genteelly dieted
made an attempt on the King's life. I>y fit in” j
pistol at hint which happily did not take effect.
The assassin it is said was so close to the car
riage in which were the King and Dukes of Or
leans and Nemours, that his majesty had a full
view of his person, and was enabled to point him
out to the National Guards, who inlur'diate!v ar
rested him and conveyed him to the guard house
of the chateau, without his making any attempt
to save liimsi If by flight. The feeling excited
among the troops and National Guards was such
that the wretched youth was nearly sacrificed on
ihe spot which lie had selected for the execution
of his diabolical purpose. The Dukes of Or
leans and Nemouis were both slightly wounded
by the glass o( the carriage window, which the
ball directed agiinst bis Majesty shivered to
atoms. During this scene the King exhibited
the greatest coolness and courage; and the pro
cession, immediately alter the arrest ol the as
sassin, continued its route lo the Chamber with

and the reign of terror commenced when the French
Directory muzzled the deputies, or guillotined them for
the indiscreet use ofthis privilege. Cromwell cousurnated
his usurpation by silencing Sir Hairy Vane and wresting
“ that bauble” the mace from the Speaker of the House

consummated his usurpation of the people’s preroga

“ The Indian, however, is not export! to such
accidents; for he has learned by experience, that
the portion of each pine tree which points to the
Northern horizon, has fewer branches than lh*t
part which faces the opposite quarter, where,
from exposure to the rays ofthe sun, germination
is more productive. Under the terms of the ris

IN considaration of the high price of labor, the un
dersigned is induced to offier the plans of several labor
saving machines, for the me of all who Am I an interest
in the construction and completion of Rail-Roads. The
improvement* now offered were originally intended to be
patented in the United States, but delayed from the in
security ofthe patentee against tho decisions of judges
and juries, knowing less of the principle* of machinery
than of favoritism and politic*, too often beleving an ad
ditional wheel, or a very complicated lever, nr some new
form changes the principle* of the original patent ; there
fore, incapable of rendering a just verdict on infringe
ments of patents. These consideration* have induced
many, after being defrauded ofone patent, to cither seek
the nid of foreign governments or keep valuable discov
eries frem the world. These considerations several year*
since determined the subscriber not to secure h patent in
this country; thus he has kept within himself the
plan* of ten saving labor machines, three of which are
applicable to the conniriietion of Rail-Roads, nnd are of
no lens importance to the stockholders of Rail-Roads,
