come to hand, afford a fair sample of what may be ex

then Gov. Dudley’s majority cannot fall short of 10,000

Well, lias it eonic to this! Are the people of Savan -

rabid ! Have they lost every sense to their own inter- j

large portion of its business from us ! And is this the ;
return? They should rather be suppliants to us than
the first to proscribe us. Nay—the only ones to do so.
Look to Charleston—will she follow in the course of

the fruit of her madness. We have the means —we have

TO THK AUTHOR OF “ NA V A A V All.”
Dear Sir: —The liberty you have taken in comment
ing on my addres . lo State Right friends is freely ac
corded to you. You may he right in sup|>osiiig that
two-thirds of the State Rights purty are in favor of a
United States Batik, f know very mans of the most
respectable and intelligent of that, as well as the other
party, who are of that opinion, Ido not write now
either to dissent on this point, or to atteni|U to put you
right, but solely with a view to disavow to you, and all
iimi-subtrejsury men the design you impute to me of
characterising all such as Clay men and Bank men, 1
am unconscious of having done this in my letters; I
I could not have done it, lor I know it would not have
been true. By referring to them, you will perceive I
spoke hypothetically and comparatively.
In common with all subtreasury men, you say I am
*< al heart a Van Burcn man.” Sir, I cannot envy
the charity that dictates this charge. As to this I have
said enough; you who discredit the witness that has
gone before, will not believe “ though one should rim’
from the dead.” Those wlm know me better than
yourself, will believe wlmt I have eaid and now repeat,
that whilst I Ironestly think the separation of bank
and state the safest policy, the one best calculated to
lessen executive inllucncc, I shall act with the admin
istration on that question, if elected. But, as w> the
*• heart,” it only feels for that cause which Van Buren
roniributrd to prostrate, and Clay Is pledged to tram
ple under loot.
The explanation of the difference between a “ State
Right Sub Treasury man. and a Union Hub Treasury
man,” desired by you, cannot be furnished by me, if
your intelligence is nut sufficient to dictate it.
If to gratify an aspiration to represent the party, I
could change nty opinion, 1 should leel I had parted
with one of the cardinal virtues oft Nullilier—you
ought to think me unworthy.
It was not to gratify any vitws of mine that I was
nominated—mine were of a diflerent kind. I can ss
! sure you, I feel more interest in the confidence which
■my constituency nny rrpose in me. I’, m I could in
I any numlicr of voles given without it.
If injury has been done to the party. I have proof
abundant, that it comes not from me. It is not the
llrA lime, wo have been called “Mad Politicians,” nay,
even worse than that—on every such occasion, otic
w ish has been that our disease might continue, rather
than change to something worse—you say my “duty
11 plain. So it seems to me, and according to its
convictions I have acted. I thank the free country in
whoso atmosphere I first breathed, mid the pupilage
tnat taught me to speak the truth—that I run permitted
to aot according to the former, and am required to ut
ter the sentiments of the latter. You will, therefore,
excuse me for declining tke advice you so kindly ten
der to turn with the breeze and run with the current.
In doing so, 1 should feel, too, that 1 was parting with
the good company who, indifferent to personal con
siderations have thought it their “ plaain duty”
what to them seemed right. Nnr can I take vour sug
gestion to “decline’ a nomination already accepted.
! My reasons will appear, if the committee will do me
too justice to publish my letter, of acceptance.
I have been thus respectful, without a knowledge
of your name, from a Irelief that your Address is from
Savannah, a city in which our political friends are few.
but highly respectable and influential and therefore
entitled to as rnueh as is given. Henceforward par
don me, if I should feel myself relieved of any further
obligation to reply to an anonymous writer.
