THE ELECTIONS.!
The returns as far as received from North Carolina,
comprising 3D counties, give Dudley a majority of two

the Legislature a majority ~f 10 to the Whigs.
In Alabama, Crabh, whig, has liecn elected to Con

In Kentucky, Missodri, Indiana ami Illinois, the re
turns as fir as received arc favorable to the Whig*.

ELECTIONEERING.
The Mobile Examiner says, “ the city has suffered
much in her moral eliararter by the recent electioneer
ing scenes"—no doubt of it; and wc have long since
■ looked upon it as degrading and demoralizing in the
extreme to pass through an electioneering campaign in
Georgia. This sy stetifofttcuting cajoling and bribing
which is practised throughout all the Southern States,
with a view to gain voter;, is positively a ridiculous, out
rageous, and w icked practice, and should lie discounte
nanced by every man of moral worth—the candidates
should frown upon it—the whole community should
set their faces ngaint it. Where is that intellectual in
dependence which should characterize ait American
, freeman in the exercise of the elective franchise 1 Crip
| pled in its strength.and despoiled of its beauty, by that
I miserable system of canvassing for votes by which mon-
J ey is substituted fur principle, and the oil of the tongue
and the juice of the grape, serve to w ash uway alt
honesty of purpose and purity of motive 1 Wo sjs-uk
in u general sense; the same course is pursued in eve
ry portion of the State. No sooner are the nominations
made, than the different candidates arc beset by hordes
of loafers and vagabonds, vv lm from the time of the last
election up to the pteeent, liuvc been embalmed in the
fumigation of w hiskey, and now stalk forth to prey
upon the false liberality of those who arc seeking pub
lic favor! Away with all such representatives of the
puro and holy spirit 0f76 ; the Constitution would re
fuse to cover them were they perishing: the mantle of
independence has flown ftom their shoulders, and left
them in the nakedness of their own infamy. A bribed
voter is an exile from lilicrty—a purchased vote is a
curse to hitn who receives it.

I - il. Tate, Dear Sir. —Pnrhapsyou would like to
Itvar front me. I li ft Boss’ Landing on the 27th of
- March, avid arrived at Fort Smith on the Gth day of
May ; a troublesome and fatiguing voyage in conse
quence of the water being low. Wc were grounded
three or four days a! a time, frequently, on the Ar
kansas Diver. There w-is hut very little sickness on
tho way, aud hut four deaths—two children and two
grown persons. The company con isted of about 300
persons. I was very agreeably disappointed in this
country. The land surpasses any part of the old Cher
okee country in richness, and as for Springs they sic
as plentiful as they were in that country, and not infe
rior to any that ever ran from the majestic Mountains
of Long Swamp. The greatest faults that I find to
lit s country is, that every tlviixj; is so high—cows and
calves are worth fr >m £2O to £25, oxen from f.CO t >
WOO a yoke, corn 75 rts. and £1 per bushel. Sly
mother, Buffington f.ynch and the Berry Itoy nre ail
settled at Bateys’ prairie. However Buffington Lynch
and the Berrys are settled thire, & ntv mother 2 J miles
west of the prairie. lam living on a creek called Ca
ney Creek, 65 or 70 miles from my mother, though I
do not expect to live here longer than this year. I
have rented a place w ith a good house, stables &c.
about 33 acres of cleared laud. I have 20 acres of it
planted, the hallanee I will plant next week—that will
be soon enough, fir what Corn IS plant and and uj.—
- was hit do.vti and kept down by the. foist. We had a
j considerable snow dtv before yesterday, hut did not
lay. ‘The people in this country dross finer than any
I |>eoph‘ that ever l have seen. They can out dress
Athens or Augusta tv a tong ways. When I left Boss’
Lauding 1 thought I hud as flue clothes as any other
Indian, but when 1 came here, I could not shine at ull
J with the people in this country, in the line of fine
clothing. You could not insult fl lady, higher in this
| country than by offering her a side saddle for less than
. £l6O. Encle Walker arrived hereon last Sunday; he
I left g and mother and the balance of the family at
( Nashville and catm-on by water. Old Treadaway left
I! ss” Landing in Ueeember, and arrived here in
March, a* crazy as ever; he walked all the wav. When
I was at Bateys’ prairie, I saw Boke hung to a large
I prairie plough with four yoke of oxen hitched to the
tore wheels of a wagon and the plough hitch and to them.
My mother arrived at Bateys’ prairie on Christmas eve
and settled in the woods, they have built comfortable
* houses, cleared and planted about G3 acres of com.—
.She Into bought 40 head of cattle none under two yea s
j old. f'hr has a fine spring about 60 or 70 yards from
| her dwelling house, nod about 12 or 1500 acres of
first rate land in one body, w 11 timbered, and as level
a* a floor. If Sharker was here he could make a for
tune : horse shoeing is worth from £2, to £2 50 ail
round. Other work in proportion. lam living in a
| tltiik act tic J neighborhood and have to sc.td 17 miles
I tn shop; in fa t all kind of work is high—a common
1 field hand is worth £2O per month. If Mitchell was
heie he could shine, because there is no carpenters in
| the country that can do good work. I have bought
three hed-stesd*. which cost me £4O, none ofthem are
lietter than what I sold buttimorc last fall, for five dol
lar*. 1 am rcspectu..ly your friend, and oht. servt.
