GEORGIA FEMALE COLLEGE.
BT A LIDT.
This noble institution, so creditable to tlte age, and
to the state in which we live, we are informed, will go
into operation next year. Wc have watched, with
deep solicitude, the consummation of an enterprise in
which the furmers of the youth, nay, of the whole
Union, are so vastly interested. It may not have oc
curred to every mind that this i* the liret successful
attempt ever made to (bund a female college. Tha
world seenis, at last, to have partially awakened from
; ita slumber of six thousand years, and to have become
sensible that all attempts toward the reformation of tlie
I world must prove coinperutivcly fruitless, so long as
; half its intellect remains uncultivated; or, what is
worse, so cultivated as to render it a curse, rather than
a blessing to the community. We were rejoiced to
hear it announced by Ur. I’ierce, at the Munroe camp
meeting, that lire conrse of instructions pursued in the
college would be such as not only lo develope the morel
and intellectual, but also the physical powers. That
they aimed not at making good scholars merely,- hut
useful, efficient woman. This is as it should be. The
opposite course has been too long putsued, and its per
nicious and melancholy results are obvious to the most
careless observer of the customs and manners of socie
ty. Let the young ladies of this republic continue
another half century to receive what has, during the
last twenty y cirro, been considered a gentle education,
and there will not be energy enough in the country,
mental or physical, to guide the helm of state, or to
defend its princely institutions. As long as the dauglt
!ers ol the rich, those who give tone to the manners of
xo.’iety, are so educated as to consider useful industry
ana ‘.he arts ol domestic economy beneath the dignity
of an t “omplished lady; so long shall we witness bank
ruptcy, oh nc, and the wreck of domestic altars.
Wc hail, jut the harbinger of better days, the cstali
lidiing of an t, ‘•Utnlitm, of such a character as to se
cure the confidetiv <* And patronage of our wealthy citi
zens. Strange, inu *d. I hut. on this circumstance,
should have ever (seen . untied an objection against the
school ; since there is no r.'n.s iu the country, where
reform is mare imperatively <J Nnaadgd, and we cannot
but regret that an attempt shou over be made to ex
cite prejudices between the and ffre, 1 classes of society ;

Creator! If pride forbid him to answer, mark the
suppressed sigh, and question him no further. Take!
the some path that he has pursued, and by the time it j
shall have oaud acted you to the same goal, he will
have fallen a prey to some disc ise engendered by luxu
>ion- living: hi* children pampered in indolence and
luxury, unskilled to think or act, will have squander- 1
ed the vast estate acquired by so much labor and self-’
denial.
But to the Georgia Female College, This noble I
edifice, with all its contemplated privileges, is not to lie
exclusive in its character. And. we presume the re- A |
port originated in nothing worse than ignoranee of the 11
designs of the trustees and patrons of the school. l)i- 1
reef provision if making to educate the daughters of
the poor; to raise them from moral and intellectual 1
darkness, and to prepare then) for respectability and j
usefulness. We are aequainted with at least one ,
weal.hr gentleman, who was induced to subscribe 1
trom no other consideration, and humorously observed ,
that lie did not suppose any but the poor would ever j ;
be willing to study, and they certainly ought to have 1
an opportunity ; so that in regard to this institution,!
we have very little to fear from the rich, unless they ‘
manifest their hostility in some other way, than by
contributin’ lo the liberal education of the poor man's
1 daughter, by placing her in the same school with hi* j
- wn —at the same tabic—in the same class, and under
the instruction of the same professors.
But the extent to which this god-like charity can
he prosecuted, depends wholly on the pecuniary ai 1
extended to the trustees. “1 ‘ll is is a subject that pow- J
erfully recommends itself to female sympathy and ‘
benevolence; au enterprise that should engage the
heart and hands of every woman who can feel for the
poor, or who regards the honor of her sex.
Iluiidnds ot indigent young men have, by the avail*
of female industry, been liberally educated and pre
pared for teachers and missionaries, and this too, (in

considered almost equivalent to a journey to

asylum is contemplated in the Georgia Female College.
Thanks to Heaven, and to the founders of this noble
edifice, that, with the accustomed chivalry and gene

cuted a plan for the disenthralineut of female mind;
for the elevation of femule character. Lasting praises

irtessis. Editors. —l notice in the Georgian of the
23d insl. a reply to iny article respecting the course pro
jioscd to he pursued hy the Banks of Savannah, towards
those in the interior, on tire resumption of specie pay
ments. Ido not intend to pursue the subject far,
trusting that the ]>eople of .Savannah will be. convinced
that it is ill-limed, illiberal, and will prove injurious to
all parties, and especially to themselves. The juncture
is particularly unfortunate; as harmony and unanimi
ty among the Hunks was never so much required—!
and a strict care should be used to promxte public
confidence in each other, instea 1 ofilliberality and pro
srription.
I am at a loss whether I should assume that the wri
ter in the Georgian, and the Banks, have spoken the
wishes ofthe mercantile community of Bavaitnah.—
Those two interest being so nearly allied I should un
hesitatingly treat them as one, did I not know that
some of the Utter have been found as ready to condemn
the folly and sureid.d course of the Banks against the
business cf their city as I linvc been. Whether that ‘
which the writer is pleased to term inv “rage” will
prove “ impotent” or otherwise, time will soon deler

luve now the ateganity to discriminate between a fair
dealing merchant and an impudent pick-pocket—the ‘
former I never hex'd boasting very largely about him- 1
self, or disparaging others; and the latter always ready
to let the public 1 uovv that he is the personification
ot persecuted innocence, at.d the beet nmn in the com

P. td. As it will probably gratify the writer in the
Georgian, I would request you to copy his article.
* I learn that the Banks of Alillcdgcville have re
plied to those of -Savannah, deefhaing the honor of ac-;
cepting their terms. Those of !K'Con and Columbus
have vciv properly taken no notice i f them. No doubt
they liaxethe presumption to think themselves out of
tlie old lady’s leading strings.
From llie Saranitah Ceoryian.
The rage of “ Macon,” a writer iu the last Macon
Messenger, is impotent. Because the banka of SGvan
nah, from which nearly all tlie specie of the interior
hanks has constantly been drawn, have resolved that
they will not receive the notes of tlie country bun he, !
unless an agent is located here to re leant those note! j
in specie, or its equivalent, the whole city, of Savannah
is denounced—its people are hostile to Macon and its I
interests, and should be made to feel tire mighty pow- !
cr of that magnificent commercial emporium. Rcallv. j
there are no other banks in the country except tltiose 1 J
of Macon. Columbus, and Athens, anil Milledgcville,
and llawkinsville, and other town*, have no bulks
whose notes now circulate in this community. It is
Maco 1 alone against which, in this wri Let'* view, the
enm ty of Savannah is directed. Was ever sheer non- ’

the housless city of Brunswick, w here there will be ‘
other |iatuotie Georgians, to sell them promptly on

be diverted front its accustomed channel—not by ca- j

the ready and luminous pens of such ns - Macon.” To
what lengths will not ignorance and vanity lead some
men ! If there be any fair ground on which tics reso
lution ofthe Savannah i-anks in to be attacked, let us
have it, instead of abuse. New York and Boston, even
Chat let.tm, which is to take the trade of Macon—and
other Atlantic cities have made the same regulation

Yesterday was a memorable dm iu this city, and

out commotion, without injury to themselves, and with- !
