X*7E advise our Houthein friends to avoid.ns they
v v would a nest lienee, tlie line of stages between
Montgomery and Augusta, on which otic John Dillon,
or Dillihan, is engaged as driver.
J’liis icllovv is a full-blooded Irish scamp, utterly
reckless of the lives of his passengers, and ready nt any
moment to sacrifice them rather than that the coach he
drives should be behind.
On Friday night last, between Macon nnd Milletlge
v*‘le, he started his horses upon the run, w ith a crack of
tho whip nnd a wild whoop, attempting to pass the coach
belonging to the Beople’s’KineJn which the snliscriliers
pad taken passage: tlie liornes of this conch took fright,
and started also upon the run. Hero was no very en
viable or ngracnblo scene. A stage race at midnight, \
over a rough nnd hilly road, is not an adventure iu ;
winch a sensible man would like to find himself. Ours
was fortunately attended with no loss of life, but the
escape wns a narrow nnd a remarkable one; after run- !
ning at full speed about three humlrcd yards, tlie coach- I
es came in contact with a tremendous crash, doing nnlv 1
the injury of breaking the spokes of our wheels. Shortly
after, we drove into a sand-bank, and our driver wns !
enabled lo hold up his horses, ami John Dillon hud the
glorious opportunity of passing the coach. The run
ning into our stage was, in ali probability, intentional
on the part of this Dillon, for there is a wnriniind hostile
jealousy and opposition carried on bv the “Mail nnd
Telegraph lines’* to the “ Beople’s Line,” an opposition
in vhiclt the passengers of either line are the unfortu
nate sufferers. The drivers generally regard llieii pas
sengers ns so ninnv unimportant units whose comfort
nnd safety is second to the all grand matter of “making
gotd time,” or of arriving at some petty country village
ten minutes and a half earlier than the other. The lives 1
of o dozen passengers are endangered, nnd the happiness
of their families are subject to the ridiculous strife of
twe stage dlivers, that one may boast that he was three
qurrters of a minute before bis opi osilion.
I would be better that travellers who take this route
shoild provide themselves with the means of prevent
ingor punishing such an aggression as the one we com- !
plan of; nnd most certainly, if this John Dii'on had 1
not concealed himself on our arrival nt Macon, we
shoild have been spared the trouble of warning our
frisids against him.
I is to be trusted that tlie proprietors of the “Mail
anc Telegraph linos,'’ however anxious they may ho to
injtre the “ People’s Line,” will not continue in their
employ such a reckless scoundrel ns Dillon, uml it is
ther duty to adopt the rule of the other stage, and posi
tivev forbid racing. The fntc of the Puluski and the
Moiclle should certainly Imvc taught the public that
ther.trnvngunt desire to “make time” and lie “ahead,’ :
are int consistent with safety, and if the drivers of stage
ct .ches are of a different opinion, pusstugers ought to
hnv; the means at hand of enforcing their owr. ideas of
the matter, and take vpon them selves the responsibility
Os toustruing a driver’s duty * they ooderstomi il. \
