lines ot Steamers from Savannah to Florida, and three

The, Finance Committee, reported in favor of D. Gar
raugbtvs hill of sl7, which was received, and on motion
wus ordered to he paid together with uli other bills, for
burying Paupers, which have been reported correct, by
the Finance Committee, and received hy this council
Sundry bills for oil and cleaning the Fire Engines,
amounting to $25, was passed and (f dered paid.
Ordinance No. 34, lo organise the Fire Department
in the City of Macon, was read second time, and passed.
Ordinance No. 31.
An Ordinance to organize , the Fire Department in
the City of Macon,
Sec. Ist. Be it ordained by the Mayor and Council
of the City of Macon, and it is hereby ordumed by the
authority of the same, that immediately ulter the pas
sage of this Ordinance, the Chief Engineer and Fire
Masters, herein afterwards named,proceed to orgunizn
nnd enroll, Seventy-five Slaves, owned and permanently
residing in the City, to work the Engines, and consti
tute. the operative torce of the Fire Department.
Sec. 2d. And be it futlher orduined, That in consid
eration of their services, the said Slaves shall he ex
empt from poll and road tax, und from all other taxa
tion ; and each fcUuve shall receive twenty-five cents for
eacli and every drill, anti twenty-five ceuis per hour, for
every hour that they work at a Fire, to be .paid them by
the Chief Engineer and Fire Masters, immediately after
the drill or fire is over.
Sec. 3d. And he it further ordained, That each Slave
shall he furnished with a Badge by the Council; and
shall he under the command of the Chief Engineer and
Fire Masters. Any Slave being absent from two Drills,
or an alarm of Fire, shall forfeit the privileges here
in granted, unless an excuse be rendered tTiut will he sat
isfactory to thp Chief Engineer and Fire Masters,

of Fire, the first Slave getting to the Engine. House (and
raisin? a light, if it be in Ytie night) shall receive $3, the

Sec. 7. And be it further ordained, That said Chief
Engineer and Fire Masters, ahull have authority to com
mand all slaves and persons of color, at a Fire, and the
said Chief Lhgincer, or in his absence any two of too
Fire Masters, in conjunction with the Mayor or an Al
derman, shall direct the blowing up or pulling down of
any building or buildings, that they may deem uocrssa
ry for arresting tho fHV(pi*b of the Fire, and when llie
destruction by fire of the building seems inevitable.
Sec. 8. And he it further ordained, That said Chief
Engineer and Fire Masters shall have power to pass all
Bve Laws, Rules and Regulations, for the government
of* the said Fire Companies, that they may deem expe
dient not inconsistent with the Charter or Ordinances
of the City.
Sec. 9. And he it further ordained, That in consider
at ion of their services, and the exposure of their per
sons and health, the said Chief Engineer und Fire
Masters, shall be exempt from taxation, each to the.
amount of SSO per anuum, and if their taxes should not
amount to that sum, it shall he made up to them out of
the Treasury of the City—he exempt from Jury duty,
by an act of the Legislature* to bo procured lor iliat
purpose.
BEC. 10. And be it farther ordained, That nil Ordi
nances or pai ls of Ordinances heretofore passed, conflic
ting with this Ordinance, he and the samenre hcrebv re
