From the testimony of the witness es examined, it appeared that the prisoner, although recently from A- mevica, is an Englishman, and had recently frequented a public house ■called the York Minster, immedi ately in the vicinity of the cotton ma nufactory of Messrs. Hughes and Lewis, Bunhill row ; to which the nu n employed in the sen ice of Mes sieurs Hughes and Lewis resorted ; and amongst others a man named Hutchinson, who had formerly been apprenticed from the Parish of St. Martin’s, to a cotton manufactory, near Manchester, where lie remain ed till lie arrived at the age of 21 He then came to London, and was employed in the ser\ice of Messrs. Hughe’s and Co. in the wool dying business, and was in fact returned a fair workman. This man the pri soner frequently met, and hy glow ing representations of the advanta ges and great wages he was likely to obtain hv going to America, indu ced him to agree to emigrate, for the purpose of being employed in a cot ton manufactory, at a place called Cooper’s Town, within two miles of New-York, (Philadelphia) &ashort distance from the residence ol th prisoner. Messrs. Hughes and Lewis having- heard ol this negotiation, sent lor the prisoner and remonstrated w ith him on tlie illegality of the steps lie war pursuing, forewarning him at tin. same time that if he persisted in his delinquency, they would punish him with the rigor ol the law. The prisoner’s defence was -—-that Hutchinson came a second time to him, and said, he had his master’s permission to leave the coun try, and that from his solicitations he was induced to pay his passage out. Hutchinson, the artificer, seduced was then tried under an act passed in the 5th of George the First, which enacts, That any artificer, particular ly in the manufactories of cotton wool, silk, mohair, lice, who should he convicted ol, or detected in, prepar ing to leave the kingdom, for the purpose of devoting his knowledge lor the benefit and advantage of fo reign countries, not within the Bri tish dominions, should be bound to enter into a recognizance himself and two sureties for remaining in the country. Mr. .lJrondi'us's other avocations precluded him where they have lor sale, an assort- ifrom taking any part in the compilation. The whole of the labour and of the rerpon- ibility, therefore, devolved upon the com piler. lie can say little as to the execution ol the work. His motive in attempting it was to rescue from oblivion transactions which he earnestly believed to he’ worthy of the no tice of the present and future generations. He is persuaded that his book, however un refined in 6tyle and method, is sufficient to convey to the candid enquirer a correct view of those ways and wotks of God aud his people of which it professes to treat. Having been at great labour and expense in accomplishing a work so arduous in its nature, he now throws himself upon the benevolence of his friends and the fr ends of truth, for his reward. He trusts that the desire to spread the knowledge of useful occurrences will prompt them to contribute all poffible aid. It cannot be said with certainty, when the work will be ready for delivery, but it is hoped that it will not be a mure distant criod than next spring. CONDITIONS. I. The book will he printed on good paper, in a duodecimo volume of a bout 500 pages. II. The price to subscribers, neatly bound and lettered, will be two do). I a rs, to be paid on the delivery of the book. Those who become responsible for ten copies shall be entitled to one gratis.
