Ah ! why, ynfeeling Winter ! why Still flags thy torpid wing l Fly, melancholy season, fly, And yield the year to Spring] Spring—the young cherubim of love, An exile in disgrace, Flits o’er the scene like Noah's dove, Nor finds a resting place. History' of Virginia SKELTON JONES H AVING entered into a contract with the administrator of nic tate John D Buike ot Petersburg, proposes to complete the Fourth and Last Volume of the His>o* rjr of Virginia, left unfinished by the pc- m.ituie and unfortunate fate of Buike. SKELTON JONHS undertakes Ibis work with mingled sensations of satislacti on an.i diffidence : with satisfaction, when hope deludes him w iih du prospect of iite- rary fame—tor what generous bosom docs not heave with emotion, at die idea of ha ving las naaic transmitted with honour to a distant posterity—What enlightened mind isu t - Fir'd wtlrthe thiift which virtuous envy breeds And snvt with love of honorable deeds But when he nfleets upon the importance ot the work, winch he has undertaken to cunipo-c, he teds bu. too btiouglr the li- rrilted faculties with which it lias pleased the Godot Nature to mdow him. A Hi# toiy ot Vug.oia to commence with the A imrii an K vo.utioii, and terminate withttu adnnndilution ot Mr. Jefferson, embrace a period hi the hittory oi mankind, inure mportaiit than the huioric muse ever re corded. Skelton Jones naturally relies upon the patronage of every true Virginian. The H’ftory of Virginia (if well computed) which lhall record events more important, perhaps, to the welfare of man kind, than the annals of the earth afford, written by a native Virginian, who had his birth in a land ->t freedom & independence, cannot, it would feem, but be inteteftmg to the whole community. No effential alteration will be made the conditions upon which this wdrk was originally commenced. An appendix wiil explain every thing re lative to police, literature, arts, manners, manufactures, commerce, government, na val and-military ftrength, population, pro ductions, mode of living, dec. The fourth volume will contain charters and other public papers, the ftudy of which will be equally iutcrelling to the politician and anuquary. Thofe important documents which would otherwise perilh, may be thus preferved for the benefit of pofteiity. This work will notice ibe growth and settlement of the other Gates; but to the states of Maryland, North Carolina, South- Carolina, K-ingcky, Georgia and Tennes see, it will bepeculiaily interetting, inas much as the Gift fettlement, taws, chartcis, limits and conltiiutions of thofe Gates will be accurately recorded.
