On ME MO Hi —-by rooeus.
A* wan’dring, I found by my ruinous walk,
B- the dial-(t<>ne aged and grteo,
One rofe of the wildernef# left on He (lalk,
To mark where a garden had been j
Like a hrnthcrleai hermit, the laft of it*
race.
All wild in the (Hence of nature, it drew
From each wand'ring tun.beam a lonely
embrace;
For the tnght-weed and thorn overfhadow’d
the place
Wheie the flower of my forefather*!
grew.
Sweet bud of the wildrrmfn! Emblem of all
That (urvivet in the defolate heart 1
The fiduick of hlif* to it* centre may fall.
But patience (hall never drpart :
Tho’the wilds of enchantment, all vernal
and bright
In the days of delusion by fancy com*
bin'd
With the vanifhing phan'oms of love and
delight,
Ahindon tny (oul like a dream of the ni .ht,
And leave but a desart behind.
From the American Advocate.
Oil. why do we Woman adore ;
She is roving and wild as a bee ;
And yet 1 could kneel and implore
For one glance of affection on me.
*Tis enchantment around her that
dwells, '
It is tnagir that rolls in her eye ;
Tvly heart like a traitor rebels,
And from mine to her bosom
would fly.
Oh beauty! how fatal thy blaze,
To a weight whom misfortune
annoys l
He nothing can <lo hut to gaze,
Whilst riches can revel in joys.
CABBAGE PLANTS.
As Cabbage Plants are frequently
destroyed by the worms soon aftei
being planted, we suggest to orfir rea
ders a simple and easy method ot
preserving them. Nothing more is
necessary for this purpose, than to
wrap a small piece of paper round
the plant when setting it out—let
the paper go a little below the sur
face of the ground, and extend
about half an inch above it—this will
form a shield against the worm,
nvhich we believe to be effectual. A
leaf of tobacco would answer the
purpose equally, and perhaps would
be preferable on account only of its
furnishing a sort of manure for the
plant, but for the purpose of preser-
valion we believe the paper to be suf
ficient. In recommending this ex
periment we would observe, that we
have witnessed its advantages ; of a
square of 180 cabbages, round each
of which we put a small piece of pa
per, not one has been injured by the
worm, while another square planted
without any shield has been entirely
destroyed.—American Watchman.
