Medical Impostor!
ON the night of the 20th of July
last Dr. Davio T. W. Cook eloped
from his place of residence in the dis
trict ol York, South Carolina, where
he had for some time attempted to
palm himself on the public as a Phy
sician and Surgeon.
The subscribers, actuated bv prin
ciples of patriotism and phvdanthro-
pv, think it their dutv to make the
following statement of facts, for the
correctness of which they pledge
their reputations for veracity, and e-
very claim to the respect of their fel
low citizens at large.
Dr. David T. W. Cooke was rai
sed in the village of Charlotte, North
Carolina. After receiving a smat
tering of education, he obtained
through the influence ol his triends
a subaltern commission in the feder
al army. While in the armv he mar
ried an amiable young woman of con
siderable propc rty in the county of
Currituck, in the state of North Ca
rolina. After wasting her property
and contracting debts to the amount
of about fifteen hundred dollars, he
removed to Franklin county, from
whence he eloped in arrears about
twelve hutidred dollars, leaving lib
wife with two children, arid in cx-
pectancy of another, to subsist on
the bounty of her friends or to per : h.
His wife and three children are yet
living, and obtain tbi ir subsistence
through the munificence c-f her affec
tionate mother, lie next returned
to Charlotte, where he spent three
or four years in idleness d the most
wanton dissipation. Alo-r contract
ing debts in Charlotte which he vras
unable to discharge, he took slicker
iu York district, booth Carolina, and
commenced the study and practice
ol physic. From this place he elo
ped in July last, indebted not less
than one thousand dollars. In ad
dition to the audacity, with which he
incessantly practised hi , fraudulent
and swindling arts, lie has seduced
from his friends and business in this
district a young man of sober and in
dustrious habits, by the name of
Green B. Hudson. This unfortunate
young man has yet to learn that no
degree of confidence is to be reposed
in a man who is well known never
to have possessed the smallest spark
of friendship, or any of those agreea
ble qualifications which constitute the
character of a gentleman or good ci
tizen. Immediately before his flight,
Dr. Cooke, under specious but false
pretences, procured certificates, ex
pressive of his medical acquirements,
from several respectable citizens of
this district, one of whom has affixed
his signature to this publication.
Doctor Cooke is of the common
size and of very handsome figure.
His nose is somewhat aquiline and
his complexion florid. His eyes are
small, of a light blue and very' quick,
with an uncommon*dimple on his
chin. He plays extremely well on
the fiddle and is very fond of frolics,
lie is boastful,impertinent andassum-
iag in company,and withal addicted
to drinking.
