Extract from *tliu minutes of the Senates
Acadcmicus of 1 ill It.
Wueiias it is important that the Senates
Academicus, presiding over the interest of the
Literature of the State, should have minute
and correct information of the state of edit-
ration in every section thereof, and the clause
of tie.' charter nf the university, requiring that
a report IVoin each county, containing that
information, should be laid before tire Hoard,
at each annual session, having by long disuse
become almost obsolete. Resolved, that it

It lias often been said, figuratively, that
marriage is a lottery; but we tin nut recollect
to have met with a practical dhistrati.gi ctf
tlie truth uf tlie. simile before the following;
which is a free ttnnslation of »n adveitist-
nrent in tltc Louisiana Ga/itic:
“ A \ • hi11o man, of good figure and dispo
sition, unable, though desirous to procure a
wile, witlmtit tlie preliminary trouble of
amassing a fortune, pn pous the following
expedient to attain the object of his w isiies.--
llc oilers himself as the prize ol a lottery to
all widow s and virgins under Si- Tne num-
liei of tickets to la: six hundred, at fifty dol
lars each. But one number to he it urn from
tire wheel, tire fortunate propiietor oi vvliiclt
ia to he entitled to himself and die 30,000
dolltii's.”
The plan is ingenious, and if adopted
gem raliy, without the fimitjtinn of age,
might he productive of the happiest effects on
■loci ly, inasmuch as it would lend to dimin
ish lliu number of those “ who pine iu single
wretchedness," and by Leeping .dive tout
hope of a helpmate, the want of which is tlie
chief somce of tlie ill temper which is said tu
cliaiaclcrize a certain class of a certain sex*
it would add much tu tlie comfort ol many do
mestic circles. We doubt, loo, whether of
liie mutches formed in this way, an equal
proportion would not prove as happy us of
those made in the usual innnnur. The prize
being known, no ittdv would enter for it with
out at least us much reflection us pi ecedes ot-
dinary tniuri.tgea; and although the »AMb.-
UKiii would run the. tisk of an unpleasant
helpmate, lie would he certain of or.“ of the
objects which is supposed to be eiseiFiil iu
connubial happiness.
