The Devil in Ihi Buttermilk.—During my
slay in Irekiin!, being on a visit to a friend,
who resided itt one of the distant parishes, I
was striken with the “clieriv checks and
tempting lips” of a voting dairy maid, whom
i often saw pass the house in which! resi*
ded. i enquired her name and residence,
and found that she lived v»ith a protesta ut
parson, ?ho besides preaching the doctrines
of the gospel, kept a very extensive farm.
After a low side winks at this pretty damsel,
I determined to make her a Visit during the
time tho preacher delivered from the pulpit
his “twice told” sermon ( went accor
dingly, as soon ns ! observed the parson and
his dame enter the church. It is needless to
tell tlie many soft words I whispered into
her year; so (ft re it to say I found her just as
1 should wish, hut miltiritily, love is so in
sensible to every thing hut bis own general
fccli' gs,that I rather overstayed my tune.
We were roused from our pleasing that
hv the old man and his wile thundering at
the door for admittance. What was to lie
dot.e ? there was not the usual retreat (ft
lmt rs—a bark door—and to leap ft'om either
ol the windows woidd have been to plunge
into the jaws of the lion, “ For heaven",
sake, my dcar, cram me wlicie yon will,”
cried I, “ I would not have the parson catch
me lutic for the wotltl !” “I’m half out of
my wits!” said she, “let me see—I have
it!—get you into that big chum (pointing to
a large churn that stood in the corner ot the
loom,) he quick, fur God’s Sake—they’ll not
suspect you being there, for they never ust#
it on Sundays.” In I jumped—and in a
moment was in utter daikjtess—she having
put on the lid. In this situation l overheard
all that passed. The parson and his wife
were let in—the hitler not without scolding
the maid lor Keeping (item so long at tlie
door, who said she was asleep,—and all was
well.
The old lady then (old the maid that slits
must immediately put the cream into tlie
h.rge churn and go to wotk tor it was
expected there would lie a scarcity of butter
in a little while, and they had better mak*
the best use of their time. “Lurl, ma’am,”
said the frightened git I, “would you lire ik
the sabbath ?” “ Break the sabbath, you
jade! there is no harm in working on Sun
day, when we ate brought to ilby necessity !
put in the cream, 1 say.” The m ud then
asked if the small churn would not (to r'—
“Not a whit,—not a whit gul ? the large
cl.urn "ill work more at a time.” “Dear
me, ma'am. 1 have always been brought tip
to keep the Sabbath sacred.” “Tut, tut i’*
replied the (lame, as the parson cuiei'd,
“ hcre iny dear, this wetich will not chum
because tl is Sunday •,— when I tell her
butter will be scarce in a few days.” “ Out
upon ye, girl !” cried the son of the pulpit,
** out upon ye ! do ye think tf I got inv mate
into the bog this morning, that | would’nt
take her out bt cause tt is Sunday ? pish ! go
make your butter, I say.” All was vain.'
she was obliged lo do tlie bidding of her su
periors.
I set all this while snug in the churn, re
sign! (I lo my fate, when down on my poor
ill fated head came a pail full of cream—I
held my bieath until il passed, and then
breathed again, hoping it was finished here ;
hut no—in came another—and another!—
tlieie I sat, up to my chin in milk—one
bucket more and I should be a diowned
man! what was to he done? I hit upon
something at last. Just as the fourth was
impending over my head, I leaped up on top
the churn, all besmeared, with cream, shak
ing myself, and making the tru st diabolical
faces the human visage could form. It bad
the desired effect; the inaid favoring the
trick, screamed out that the devil was in the
Imuetmilk, and ran up stairs! The parson
and Ins wife scampered into the kitchen,
tumbling head and heels over caMi other! I
took no time, jumped out of the churn, out
of the window, and did not look behind me
until I arrived safe at home.
Thus ended nty adventure with the dairy
maid. A story got among the preacher’s
superstitious flock, “ that the devil had risen
from the churn and accused him of impious
ly breaking the Sabbath.”
The parson himself really believing that
it was the devil, never again attempted Co
make butter on a Sunday.
Ladies IMtrary Cabinet.
A gentleman having a horse that started
and broke his wife’s neck, a neighboring
’squire told him he wished to purchase il for
his wife to ride upon. “ No,” says the other
“I will not sell it—I intend to marry again
myself.”

Funtenelle.—Wit, or even what the French
term esprit, seems little compatible with
feeling. Ftunwielle was a great egotist,
and thought of nothing but himself—Oi«i
of his old acquaintances went one day to see
Ihiii at his country house, and said he had
come to eat a bit of dinner “ What shall
we have ? Do you like ’sparagus ?” said
Fontenelle. “ If you please ; but wiih oil.**
“Oil! I prefer them with sauce.” “But
sam e disagrees with me,” replied the guest.
“ Well, well, we shall have them with oil.”
Fontenelle then went out to give his orders^
but on hi- return found Ins poor acquaint .nice
dead of an apoplexy. Running to the lieatj
olThe stairs, he called out “ Cook ! dress
the ’sparagus with sauces”
