Chance led hint one day u» the dwelling
of Clint lone Lee. He admired the situa
tion, and the mistress of tbe delightful cot
tage, and became, in process of time, a fre
quent vixitor. Charlotte loved the melan
choly stranger, and in iho innocent simplic
ity of the times, welcomed him to the cot#
t:ige. and soothed him with her smiles, and
ministered almost imperceptibly to hiswoum,
ded spirit. Whatever might have been tbe
cause of Ins previous gloominess of soul, the
light of a new found source of pleasuie and
happiness came acioss his brow ; he improv
ed in health and spirits ; soon his gaiety aud
life gave a new zest to the rural festivals of
the country ; and the change was observed
by all who knew him, before the came was
stihpeetod. At hUt it discovered itself. Ho
became the professed suitor of Chatlotte
Lee ; and though still teserved, the unstained
purity of Ids character, and the innate worth
that shone through all the transactions in
which he was engaged, so fuirly established
bis claims to virtue and honor, that he found

Charlotte was ruanied to the mysterious
sttangm.
