“ The work before iis most be allowed not
only to possess the interest inseparable from
such a narrative, but to make liignlv impor
tant additions to our knowledge of the geog
raphy ami natural history of the valley of
the Mississippi and the Missouri. The se

records, and vocabularies of various Indian
languages. A considerable accession is made
by the latter to the stock of materials in a
study daily rising in interest. We do not
think it necessary to enter into a minute
criticism of the style, though it is occasion
ally less simple than we could wish. With
this exception, the literary execution is high

The highest encomiums are bestowed up-
on Mr.Tudor’s Life of Otis, which is proper

which that illustrious individual lived, and
of the band of patiints uf wlmm lie was the

'■ perfectly authentic materials ; a judicious
and happy accumulation and selection of
incidents ; original and sound comments;
a pure and elegant style, and very able and
faithful portraitures.

which possesses equal authority with any
other of the kind in the world. The follow
mg testimony is borne to Professor Cleave-
land’s work. “ It is alike honorable to the
author anti bis fellow ritizens, that a second
edition ol this valuable work lias been so

we have bestowed on it, almost renders it
superfluous to add, that we think highly of
it. I i bidding Mr. Cleaveland farewell, we

The Shakers.—Amidst all the singularities
of the Shakers, they have some rules which
ould be well for people of all denomina
tions to adopt “ It is contrary to older, or
the gift, as they call it, (says Professor Silli-
ill w n, in his Tour) to leave any bars down, or
gales open ; or leave any thing they use out
I its proper place ; consequently they sel
dom have any tiling lost. It is according
to the gift, or order, for all to endeavor to
keep all things in order; indolence and
carelessness, they say, are directly opposite
to the gospel and orderof God ; cleanliness,
in every respect, is strongly enforced—it is
contrary to order even to spit oti the floor.
A dirty, careless, slovenly, or indolent per
son, they say, cannot travel in the way of
God, or be religious. It is contrary to or
der to talk loud, to shut doors bard, to rap at
the door for admittance, or to make a noise in
any respect ; even when walking the floor,
they must be careful not to make n noise
with their feet. They go to bed at 8 or 10
o’clock, and rise at I or 5. Every man and
woman must be employed and work steadi
ly and moderately.” Trifling astheso rules
may appear, their adoption would have, a
very important effect upon any household or
community.

FIT HE author of the articles which are to com*
L pose this volume, never wrote with a view to
fame or profit; he merely obeyed the impulse of
the moment. Of those which* wore sent to the
press, he seldom retained copies ; and they were
usually forgotten by him, until recalled to bis mind
by the public prints, which have often gratified hint
by flattering notice, but have also frequently an
noyed him bv mutilations which were extremely
mortifying. This last circumstance (beside* pri
vate solicitations and other motives) has induced
him to collect with considerable pains, bis scatter
ed effusions, ami to add some unpublished pieces ;
which altogether will have at least the merit of
being genuiat—and perhaps that uf inculcating, to
the best of the author's capacity, good principles
and amiable sentiments—excluding all matters re
lative to party polities.
Disinterestedness is not pretended ; It is confes
