is indued, a most learned and masterly
sketch of tlio most abstruse, nnd difficult
and perfect of tho sciences—a coup d'ail
of the vast «nd various Inbotji of flic New.
tons nnd Hcrochula of modern times. Th*r
great inventions and diHenvcries, by which
tho science bus advanced to its present high
ly improved statu, arc presented in bold rr ; -
luif ffefuro us, ami diseussod in n manner
that shews a most intimato acquaint.*m* <j
with the subject, in all its extent and depth,
dstmls nnd bearing*. The merits of dif
ferent ohm vers, of different observations,
instruments, hi,*1 instrument makers, aro
touched upon, and tlio most ct riom and
s'riking results are gb anod out of tbu Hugo
mass of mutcritils, wiili which this depart
ment of tho science ii encumbered. Tho
successive steps and laborious processes**,
by which astronomical tables hav e been im
proved, and the degree of prefection to
which they aro now brought, era dourly
traced and exemplified. The t tvv fi. hl-#
brought to light by the telescope nro glan
ced at, with refereitro to the modifications
growing out of tins accession to the s to
tem.
But what the author of this artiela seems
to dwell upon with peculiar satisfaction ia
tho progress of tho calculus, as connected
with the development and establishment of
the theory of gravity. Hera we aro intro*
dueod to those master spirits, writose ronrso
has been so far above tho ken of tho ting if-
ted mortals, and who have hitherto had so
littlo converse with the nrthrr world.--
Their respective claims Hre weighed nnd ad
justed as t'roely and fairly as th«y aro auth
oritatively. W’r lire accustomed to hear only'
tho most unqualified praiso of such men as
Newton and Laplace. One example, from
u high authority, will serve as u specimen.
“ It ib in vain that wo search every corner
of the Newtonian writings for sumo trifling
proofs that their author was, lilt* ourselves,
liable to the common intellectual failings of
the species.”—Edinburg libwio*r rot. id.
p. S. In tlm article under consideration,
Newton, and those who bnve wovud u, the
same elevated sphere, assume iks charac
ter of fuliiblo beings of this earth ; their
methods and results are subjected to criri*
cistu, and the sound and the true Aro sepur*
uted from the unsound and the erroneous.
Their high speculations, moreover, rr« pig.
cud before us without pretension, without a
word of triumph, or sclf-grntulation, and
without betraying thu consciousness of
having done any thing rmnavkablt. And
yet their is an air of familiarity with tho
subject, and a tone of deep conviction, nbt
to be assumed or mistaken, and which dc*'tf
not permit us to doubt, fur a moment, that
lie who thus pionounCei judgment in mat
ters of such high import, is well aware what
be is ul>out; that he Ktandd on firm ground *,
that he measured his strength with thoso gi
gantic minds, to whose powers he vrntur»‘w
to fix the limit, and that, though some of
the parties are still living, there w ill be 110
appeal from tint decision.
We are oft*!n rnnainded, In reading thhl
article, of the reported conversations of Bo*
ne retx
napotte, in which fn> discusses the politic®
of Europe ; descants upon the momentous
events of the Revolution ; stumps, by a
sentenco or a word, tho character of somo
great Marshal or great Minister, or a groat
battle ; passing by, as scarcely worthy of
his notice, second ratu heroes, and states
men, nnd transactions.
Tho only regret of the reader is, that the
person who could write thus, did n«t write
more ; that the profound author has not
given us his notes, discoveries, und reflec
tions, at large ; instead of tLi- rapid and
condensed outline.—Were the public and
tho world thus favored, this niticlo exhibits
abundant proof tliatit would be equally ail
honor to our country and to the ago.
Of those who are in any degree acquain
ted with the subject, few need bo informed,
that there is but one individual on this side
of the water, and art extremely limited
number 011 the oilier, who would assume
such a responsibility as that of which w«
have spoken. Our nation is now just com*
plating its fiftieth year. Wo aro allowed,
by both hemispheres, to have produced ono
General, tlio Father of his country ; oua
Philosopher, Franklin ; we may now bonM,
without ostentation, of one Geometer, Bow-
ditch, of the same high intellectual order.
By calculation and estimate, General La*
fayette, when ho returns to Franco, will
have travelled, from the time ho I eft his na
tive soil for this country lust summer, to tkn
day of his return, between sixteen am!
eighteen thousand miles! He lias not bail
