Dreadful Punishment of a Murderess.—In the
year 1673 a midwife, in Paris. ,,U4< - her supe

t n-ive practice. Knowing that many of bee
employers weru unmarried, and that consequent
ly they would wi.-h their delivery to be as pri

good speculation to • ngage comm »dious premises
f r herself, and provided for those whose circurrv-
-t.inces could ff»rd it the necessary accommoda
tion at her own house at the. time of their lying-
in. Tiie apeculaiiou van attended with eminent
success, numbers of pregnant females took up w
temporary resid* nee in this novel institution. i&
was observed, however, by a gentleman who
• esided d'tectly opposite the midwife’s house,
hat notwithstanding the many pregnant women
hat went in to he delivered, there were compar-
itively few children that came out. It accor
dingly occurcd to him a9 the most probable sup
position to account for this, that a number of llio
young innocents must have been murdered short
ly after th**ir entrance into the wodd. lie inti
mated his suspicions to several of Ilia neighbours,
and the result was that they applied to a magis-
iate for a search-warrant, under the preteuco
'hat a quantity of silver plate had been stolen.—
Tile w»o rant was obtained, anil Uit «<-»•• L mm
nenced, when, to their indescribable horror,
'hey discovered a secret place of the house, un
der ground, in which were denosited no less
ban the bodies of sixty two children! Some oi*
them were considerable decomposed, but tho
great n ajorify of them <-eemed to have been
murdered within two or tu.ee weeks of the timo
»t which the shocking discovery was made.-—
The inhuman monster was apprehended, impris
oned, tried, and condemned on the most conclu
sive evidence, in conjunction with her own con
fession of guilt. The atrocity of her crime pro
duced such an impicSHon on the public mind,
that a universal dera md was made fo- the. iuilic-
ion of the punishment of death under the
most torturing of its forms. A most excruciating
mode of death was resorted to. A gibbet was
erected, under which a fire was lighted. The de-
linq lent was then hung up in a large iron cage,
in company with sixteen wild cats, which had
been caught in the woods for the purpose. Whetv
the heat of the fire had become intolerable, the
whole of the ferocious animal? flew on the wo
man as the cause of .he agonizing pains they ex
perienced. In about a quarter of an hour she
presented a most shocking spectacle, but contin-
m*d to five twen y minutes longer, imploring but
n vain, some of the spectators to despatch her at
• nee. Before she had expired twelve of the cats
had died, and the other four only lived about
two minutes longer. Frenckpapet.

Fh Supr* ine Court of Pennsylvania has late
ly ducked on a curious question. We learn
ion) the U. S Gaz tte that Chief Justice Gib-
s n. on Saturday last, in the case of the females of 1
S . Paul’s church, versus the vestrymen and war-
.|**ns of said church, d* eded agaiust the former ;;
three of the associate Judges concurring. That;
this ca<e may be properly understood, it will ho
necessary to state that tin* fi males, acting up
to the letter of the charter of St. Paul’s church,
conceived that they had a right to vote nt the
election for vestrymen, &c. At last Easter elec
tion their votes were refused; and a suit was
luorig t against the vestrymen, wardens, Sic, for
i breach of the charter. The charter reads thus
—any person paying pew rent, shall be entitled to
vote. &LC. ^ >
Tlie Chief Justice gave it as his opinion that
Inf portion of the charter was a violation vf the
r orstiiulion of the United States.
