there are not nny two words which awaken in
your heart such u crowd of mixed and directly
opposite emotions as tho two' which now starn
you in the face—i irst and I.AST! In the ab

existence ; in the detail, all its brightest hopes,
its noblest enjoyments, and its most cherished
recollections; all its loftiest enterprises, nnd
nil its smiles nnd tears ; its pangs of guilt, its
virtuous principles, its trials, its sorrows, nnd

clone of life; the beginning nnd the end of its
countless scene. They nro tho two extremi
ties of n path, which, lie it long, or ho it short,

Happy would it be for us, sometimes, if we

The First and Last Dinner.
Twelve friends, much about the samo age,
nnd fixed hy tlieir pursuits, their family connex
ions, and other local interests, us permanent
inhabitants of the metropolis, agreed one day
when they were drinking tlieir wine at the Stur
and Garter at Richmond, to institute an annual
dinner among themselves, under tlio following
regulations! That they should dine alternate
ly nt e.-ieh nt lien's houses on the frsl and last
day of tho year ; lltnt thoyirsf bottle of wine un
corked at u,i.fust dinner, should ho recorked
and put away, to be drunk by him who should
he the/nil of their number ; that they should
never admit n now number; that when one
tlied, eleven should meet, aud when another
died, ten should meet, and so on; and that
when only one remained, he should, on those
two days, dmc hy himself, and sit tlie usual
hours at his solitary table ; bit*, llio first lime bo
so ilined alone, lest it Bhould bo lha only, bo
should then uncork the frsl bottle, nnd. iu tho
first glass, drink to the memory of all who wero
gone.
There was something original and whimsic
al in the idea, and it was cugcrlv embraced.—
They were all in llie prime of life, closely at
tached hy reciprocal friendship, fond of social
onjoymeuts, and looked forward to their future
meetings with unalloyed anticipations of pleas
ure. The only thought, iudeed, that could
have darkened those anticipations was one not
very likely to intrude itself at this moment,
that of the hapless wight who was destined
to uucork the first bottle at his lonely repast.
lt was high io tho summer when this frolic
compact was entered into ; nnd ns tbeir pleas
ure yacht skimmed along the dark bosom of
tlio Thames, on their return to London they
talked of nothing but their.first aud last, feasts
of ensuing years. Their imaginations ran
riot with a thousand gay predictions of festivo
merriment. They wantoned in conjectures
of what changes time would operate; jokod
each other upon their appearance, when they
should meet; some hobbling upon crutches af
ter a severe fit of the gout,—Olliers poking
about with purblind eyes, which oven specta
cles could hardly enable to distinguish the al
derman’s walk in a haunch of venison—some
with portly hellioH nnd tidy litlln brown wigs,
and others decently dressed out in a new suit
of mourning for tho death of n greal-g-ranil
daughter or n great-grand son. I’alsies, wrin
kles, toothless gums, stiff hams, nnd poker
knpes, were handled ubout in salies of exhulicr- ,
ant mirth, and appropriated, ns n group of
merry children would linvo distributed golden
pnlnrcs, Hying chariots, diamond tables, and
chairs ofsolid pearl, under the fancied posses

to such cosily treasures.
‘ As for you George,’ exclaimed one of the
twelve, addressing his brother-in-law, ‘J ex
pect 1 shall sec you us dry, wilhored, and
shrunken ns an old cel skin, you mere outside of
a mnn!’ and ho accompanied the words with a
hearty slap nil tlie shoulder.
George Fortescue was leaning carolessly
over the side of the yacht, laughing the loudest
of any nt the conversation which had been car
ried on. The sudden manualsalutation of his
brother-in-law litre w him off his balance, and
in a moment ho was overboard. They beard
the heavy splash of his fall, before they could
be said to have seen him full. The yacht was
proceeding swiftly along; but it was instantly
stopped.
The utmost consternation now prevailed.—
It was nearly dark, hut Fortescue was known
to ho nn excellent swimmer, nnd startling us
the accident was, theyjfelt certain he would re
gain the vessel. They could not see him.—
They heard the sound of his bunds nnd feet.—
They hailed him. An answer was returned,'
but in a faint gurgling voice, nnd tho exclama
tion ‘Oh God!’ struck upon their ears. Innn
instant two or tlircc, who were expert swim
mers, plunged into tho river, and swam to
wards the spot whence the exclamation had
proceeded. Ono of them was within nn arm’s
length of Fortescue ; ho caw him ; he wns
struggling and buffoting the water; before he
could hn reached, Ire went down, and his dis
tracted friend beheld the eddying circles of tho
water just over tho spot whero he had sunk.—
lie dived alter him, and touched tho bottom;
hu< the tide must have drifted the. body on\vards»
for it could not lie found !
They proceeded to ono of tho nearest sta
tions where drugs were kept, nnd having pro
cured the necessary apparatus, they returned
to thofatnl spot. After tho lapse of above an
hour tney sue ;ecded in rnising the lifeless body
of theii tost friend. All tho usual remedies
wore employed for restoring suspended anim
ation ; but in vain ; nnd they now pursued the
remainder of tlieir course to London, in mourn
ful silence, with the corpse of him who had
commenced the day of pleasure with them in
die fulness ol"health, of spirits, nnd of life!—
\ mid their severer grief, they could not but re-
tlcct bow soon one of the joyous tnelvo had
slippedout of the little festivo circle.
