Society fur the diffusion of Useful Knowl

ciety was published sevcrnl weeks since, and
within the Inst few days notice Ims been gi
ven of a course of weekly lectures, to he de
li'ereil the ensuing winter nt the Athnmcum

i tl.e pour a. rise by j The plan of the society is similar in its
>1 j. cts nnd clumictcr ti that of the Meehan*
ics institute, except that the courses of lec-
, v tores delivered iimlrf the pi.tfbnnge of the
j hitter, mid more purtic.ihirly designed fur gi-
of Ken-1 v t"g instruction to mechanics in the sciences
inire nil- and i.r’scoiin. cte.l with their respective trades,

! j particularly il.'voted to brnnehes which will
'""i v ■ *” m,,st ,n persons iu mercantilo and
'".'if longh' i l ,r of«'S‘5i°i | »l employments, The Mechanics
Institute has been in operation for two or
three years With entire success, nnd tiie lec
tures lmve been attended with great punctu
ality, nnd heard with great interest hv the
members of the institute. Such a course of
instruction, so cheap, and imparted to so
great a number of persons eann.it fail to be
of great public benefit. They lmve been at
tended by many persons who are not mechan
ics, and the interest which they have excited
has increased the desire of having a course
of instruction under similar regulations, iu
other branches of knowledge.
The number of persons who have nlree.ly
subscribed the constitution of the society for
the diffusion of Useful Knowledge, and there
by became entitled to attend the lectures, is
about three hundred. The llall of the Atl.e-
.UEtim, in which the lectures are to lie deliv
ered, will accommodate live hundred. AVy
presume that before the lectures are begu-i,
w Inch (Till he about the 10th of November,
the list will he so (ill increased as to fill the
llall.
This method of instruction, which Inis
been so successfully adopted here in the Me
chanics Institution nnd in the Mechanics
Association, and at New York, has been al
so adopted iu many of the cities of Europe.
A friend lias lately put into our bunds n very
nit. resting discourse delivered at Marseilles,
at tl.e opening of tl.e Athutueum of that city
hy Mr. (.’anvii-re its Vice President, The
opening for the institution appears to have
been regarded at Marseilles as an epoch in
the history of that city. 'I he journal, which
contains the discourse, remarks, that if the
ffmt now made is sustained the c.itv of Mar
seilles will henceforward march in the fu»t
ranks, at the head of French civilization.—
The object of the Athenaeum, us developed
in the discourse of Mr. Cnnviere are first the
propagation of the pliysimil nnd natural sci
ences, together with literature and history.—-
After the courses-of instruction devoted to
the physical nnd natural sciences, it is pro
pose.I to establish nelmirofIndustri.il Econ
omy. “ This science," says Mr. Cnnviere,
like tl.e philosophy of Socrates, tnkes man
in Ids first domestic cares, to show him the
way of happiness iu order, industry uml econ
omy. It can alone explain to the labouring
and commercial classes, the theory and the
principles of their operations ; it furnishes
lo government the most just methods of tii-
•rensiug the public fortune by favoring the
productive resources of the country, and of
establishing imports according to the just
measure of those resources."
