11 LINOIS COLLEGE.
An Httcini'I is mnkir.R to procure die institu
tion of onr uf 'lie higher seminaries of learn,
ing irt llte State uf Illinois, nml 10 place (lie out
posts nf education on the came line with llioss
of selllctnenl. A cite liax hern fixed upon et
Jacksonville, a th>iiri*hine mrvn in '.lie centre
of the Stale, in a healthful anil delightful part
of the country, twenty milea from Illinois ri
ver. About two thousnnd dollars have been
1 aired in that stale, the erection of n suitable
building haa been commenced, and nu agent,
Mr. Ellin, ita* been appointed to visit the Allan*
tie Staten i« procure tmhacriptinna. His succes
haa already been considerable, having obtain*
etl six thousand dollars east of the Alleganiea,
of which three thousand have been taieed in
thiH city.
The plan of the institution is intended prin
cipally m resemble that of Yale College in ita
requisitions, modes of instruction and discip
line. A peculiarity has been introduced into
the institution however, rendered necessary
perhaps, by the stnte of :lift country, the want
of rotnmeree, nnd a scarcity of the circulating
medium. A farm of two hundred and forty
acres hns been purchased on which at proper
intervals the student will bestow their labour,
nnd the products of which will he applied to
wards the expenses of their education.
The state nf lllinoia contains at this moment a
population of "2(1,000, nnd situated, as it is, in
a temperate nml salubrious climate, contnimn|-,
as has been asserted, the greatest proportion
of fertile land ofany stnte in the Union, ami eur-
rnttnded nr intersected by majestic $,• navigable
rivers, it is continually increasing ill numbers.
The means ofeducation nt present are, however,
very limited. The state has no system of pub
lic education carried into effect—there are
scarce any public schools, nnd thv fortunes of
those w ho are desirous of obtaining a liberal
education, ilo not permit them to seek it ill tlie
distant states on the Atlantir. The new semi-
nary will not, therefore, interfere with the es
tablished institutions in this quarter.
We learn, that in addition to the sum already
subscribed, four thousand dollars, making ten
thousand iu the wlmle from the Atlantic States,
are wanted to carry the plan into operation
with a prospect of succes*.
