Lord Kittepiug, at the age of ihirty-ttvo,

lie had eaten huuaims in Rrazil, he had seen

ly atk him are you hurt 1 No, silence gives
assent. lie la nut hurt. Hi! is un English
man. Vivont les Anglais ! They are friends
of liberty ! They are lighting with us. This
man has come over expressly for tho purpose
of aiding us : there is nut a doubt uf it. Al-
lons, give kirn u crow-lmr ! he will help us
make the barricade.I Vivent les Anglais !
So saying, they provided linn with an iron
bar, long and very heavy. My Lord, not
understanding the purpose of it, rejected it
at first, crying, all red with wrath ; ,
whet an original people ! Rut sign was given
him to bear up the pavements, and nolens vo-
lens tu work lie went, tearing up in his rage
twice as much as uny body else. Uiv reflec
tions at this moment were very curious. I'ur-
tileu ! thought he, what nn originu! people !
to receive strangers in this way ! not even to
give them time to get out of their carriage, or
eat a beef stake ! certumly it is well that eve
ry country should have its own customs; it
gives nn agreeable variety to the human race.
I like to see people original: hut this, in faith,
is going a little too fur.
Having completed his barricade, my Lord
is about to retiro. To the next ! to the next!
is the general cry ; and my Lord is borne in
triumph to the other end of the street, amidst
shouts of ‘Vivent les Anglais! 1
My Lord, being not very sensible to these
marks of gratitude, of which he did not un-
derstnud a syllable, begun to scold most cur-
dial ly. Never did I see such a dev il nf a peo
ple, and yet I have seen some odd ones : I
have seen the Esquimaux, the Muuomotu-
pans, the Hottentots, hut none that came near
resembling these. Whnlfuiy possesses thorn
to unpave ul! tlieirslreets, nnd to set strangers
to work in this way ! A very original people !
The Becond barricade being completed, a
third is to he constructed, then a fouith, and
then a fifth, then , hut no, the sixth is
only in contemplation. My Lord could con
tain himself no longer ; lie began to lose all
patience, already he has lifted his liar, no
longer to unpave the street, hut toestablish
around him a cordon sanituire, when u dis
charge of mosquclry disperses the crowd,
and leaves hint lit liberty to move at his dis
cretion. He regains the street where his car
riage was lying, enters the hotel where lie was
directed, without strength to utter more than,
‘ give me something to cut, if you ever
do eat in this infernal county. A very ori
ginal people!’ The host took occasion to
explain to him what had nccuried. At every
word the face of my Lord assumed a differ
ent expression. Wrath gave place to sur
prise, and surprise to enthusiasm. ‘ I under
stand. I understand !' at length he cries
* 'Tis for liberty ! a great nation ! sublime,
hut not original ! I am not hungry. I mean
to assist them.' My Lord seized his iron
bar, sallies forth, and his bend being full of
barricades, tears up the pavement, nnd piles
up the stones before his hotel. Vainly does
Ins host interfere : my Lord is angry and
threatens to put him in the barricade. And
in the twinkling of an eye, snips up the door
so hermetically, that no body cuii get in hut
hv the window.
Then, my Lord runs through the streets, in
defiance of musket shot and grape, brandish
ing lus iron bar and shouting—‘ Long live

battle of Trafalgar. He was subsequently
appointed a Lieutenant, and was afterwards
employed in the civil department oftlie navy
at Madrid. Upon tho entry nf the French
into the city, he joined the army of Gnllicin,
and was appointed tin Ensign uf Cavalry ;
hut, on the surrender of Fcrrul, being taken
prisoner liy the Flench, lie abandoned the
cause of Ins country, & swore fealty to Joseph,
-vitli whom he became afterwards a great fa

from Spain, Vail Hulun accompanied him to
France, but was immediately dismissed in
great anger, anil with circumstances of in
sult; the reason has never been know’ll, and
even Van llnlen himself professes tube igno
rant of it. After this, lie resided n slmrl time
nt Bordeaux; hut upon tfie publication nftlic
ainnesty, he determined to return to Spain.
His motives and his conduct at this time are
extremely questionable. According to h s
own account lie joined Marshal Suelu-t nt
Barcelona, in Ins old character of a faithful
follower of Joseph, hut immediately opened
a communication with the Spanish Govern
ment, the nature of which he has not made
public. It is certain that he .vns kindly wel
comed hv the Marshal, received nn appoint
ment oil fits start', was, to n certain extent, ad
mitted into his confidence, and, liy w-ny of
making himself welcome to the patriots, lie
fabricated orders from Suelu-t, directed to
the Governors of Leridu, Mcquienzo.-.aiiH
Monzou, mid contrived to nflix the Marshal’s
signet, directing them to abandon those pla
ces, ami retreat immediately upon the main
nrmy. These orders he personally delivered,
and being well known as an officer in the
French service nttnehed to the marshal, t'.ey
were immediately complied with; the troops
nhundoiicd the fortresses, were betrayed nn
their retreat into an ambush, mid all taken
prisoners. These important services secu
red to Van llnlen a cordial welcome from the
patriots, and he was inimediuti-lv appointed
n Captain : there was, however, nothing in
them lilu-ly to win their confidence, and they
always entertained suspicions of him ; and
two years afterwards, lie was arrested by the
(•'. .MUll-HKY,
quence of some imprudence, it became known
to the Government, nnd lie .vns imprisoned
in the Inquisition of Murcia, and afterwards
ill that of Madrid. From hence, by the lu-lp
of a servant maid of the jailer, he contrived
to escape—n circumstance so rare, that it was
soon tricked out with nil possible romance,
and excited immense interest in Spain. On
his escape lie came to Euglnud, and after
wards went to Russia, where ho was admit
ted into the military service, and joined the
army of tho Caucasus ; there lie remained
till 18-20, when lie was suddenly dismissed
by the Emperor nod returned to Spain. He
then married the sister of Quiroga, served
under Mina in Cntoloiiin, and with his patriot

nine ciisch out of ten, whatever may he said

they did not regard wliat the lawyers said. If
so in any case, it involved a manifest dere-

No case can sufli-r from the commentaries of
