Next proceeded to u cabinet maker's. Got
my money iu the twinkling of a bedpost, as
Lord Duberly says. Conscientiously praised
the work of the cabinet maker---never saw
so fine tables and sideboards in my life. Exit.
Hoarded the captain of the steam-bout.---
Showed him my papers. lie said they were

and again I was off in u tangent.
Looked upon n merchant's clerk. Saw by
the smile on bis face that lie wanted to see

qudl behind his ear, laid down the Cush—-and
what more would you have? 1 was satisfied.
Iu slmrl I called upon subscribers of nil

" Mv lull, Ii i ?” Takes the hill ami exam

“ To-morrow never comes, Mr. Capias, &

“ I have a cause to argue this afternoon.”
“ That argues nothing to the present case.”
“ Any other day—”

“ 1 wdl sir.” Draws out the long lenthri

“Thunk you, sir, you are the very unto I

Next Imre down upon h seu captain. I

“ Av, ny, sir—how much is it?”
“ Three dollars.”
“Isthst till? Make it six,and i’ll pay you.”
"Thank you, thank you, Captain. I'll

“Avast there! my friend—this will keep

vastly—It is hei chart, and if I did’nt leiivi

his six Spanish dollars in my pocket and
Imunced upon a lottery broker. Got my bib
cashed in llie twinkling of an eye. Looked
about the office, saw the walls covered over
with huge prr/.es, twenty-thousand dollars !
forty thousand dollars ! ! Felt almost tempted
to make my fortune. Hut on second thought
could not afford it at present; concluded to
wait end grew richer.
Quit the lottery broker, and looked in up
on a doctor. Thought I had conic fur phys
ic. Hoped I was well, secretly wished I was
sick. Gave me Ins hand, and, instinctively
ns it were, extended Ins fore-finger lo my
pulse. Looked in my left hand, ami thought
I appeared hill-nut.— Assured him lie was
correct, and wished lum to prescribe. Ex
amined thr ease and thought a little aqua

like thn prescription. Assured hint I knew
something of the case, and iu my opinion a
small quantity nf pul vis nrgc.nti, or the silver
dust would he more efficacious. Looked
blank nt this questioning of his professional
skill. Nol inclined however to dispute mv
judgment, and made out the prescription ac
cordingly.
Directed my steps to the counting house of
a dealer in wool. Tlio’t I should find a gol
den fleece, nnd thought rightly.—Your deal
ers in wool are warm fellows, slid feel for the
liaetNi of their fellow creatures.
“ How nreynu, Mr. Editor?"
“Very well, I thank you; how are y m Mr.

“Bight well. Why have you not brought

“Here it i«, sir.”
ficicntly instructive.
“ As a fanner (said our correspondence) 1
lived, many years ago, ut a short distune
from him, I have employed several of his
s mints. The following facts will nmust
you. Ills smith still lives, ninety or upwards.
Burke ruined Inui, fur years he was unable tn
pay his blacksmith's bill, mid finis drove him
to bankruptcy. The smith’s hopes were fed
with prospects presented to Burke’s own fan
cy, a tellurslup, or something similar, lie
must have heei Very pooraud very proud.—
The wings of the house lie occupied (But-
ller’s) would each have contained four times
over, Milton’s cottage, still standing near
Chuffont. From the report of Inn carters
(ploughmen) as well as hts smith, he must at
one tune have farmed on a very Inrge scute.
I have no doubt be attempted in this manner
tn secure that independence of u proud Ar
istne.racy, for which llnnier(and now Brough
am) looked to lus profession. »*(**«•*
In uiy own opinion, taken (or all iu all
Burke's name (m spite ot bis manifold infirm
ities) ranks ns high ns any other iu the His
tory of the House of Commons. liis reflep-
limis generally were lus own; sometimes
leep, always specious, dressed up in a way
eompurable to no other except Ins models.
There was a kindred fate of these two ac
complished men in a slight degree. Both of
hem objects of admiration und of trust with
the aristocracy; both of them chuinpious
gainst desperate Toryism, or tyranny, nr de
luded Republican factious; both of them
drinking of the bitterest cup of udversity; fur
Burke's poverty broke lus heart nnd unpaired
Ins intellect. You ure uwnre of Sir l’hilips’
pillion, that he would never have preached
■ crusade against France had he possessed
£30,000 nn independent fortune.”
THE THEATRE AND LYCEUMS.
If any nf our country subscribers think we
Imve occupied ton much room on the tliea-
ire, let them reflect how nearly the matter
concerns themselves. Are not theatres set
up or proposed in all the principal towns?—
Vre not pluys for a limited season urged up-
•ii tbe inhabitants of many country villages?
And where there is nut sufficient encourage
ment for these, ure not other useless div. r-
sioiis resorted to, many of which have a di
rect and powerful tendency to dissipation and
vice ? And is it not a frequent thing that
visiters from the country flock In the theatre
in Boston, “ not knowing that it is for tin ir
life?" Should they not therefore be in for
med of the real character of the establish
ment? Ought net disclosures like these
which the proprietors have themselves pub
lished, t* lie sent into every family in the
land? The direct evil is by no means con
fined to cities.' Its ramifications extend to
almost every neighborhood ; and tins or sim
dar incentives to immortality present their
temptations toulmost every youth throughout
the country. The antidote should he circu
luted with equal diligence, and reach wher
ever the temptation comes.
The topic is appropriate to the department
in winch we labor. The amusements nl eliil-
dren and the entertainments of riper years,
are un important part of education. To
make them innocent, and salutary to health,
morals and manners, is an object of the deep
est interest. They are indispensable, for the
God of nature lias made them so in the very
construction of the yuuthlu! mind and body ;
mid if we forbid them, we violate Ins laws
and do perhaps n remediless injury to our
precious charge. Rut what shall the amuse
ments he ? In what mnnuer and degree
shall they he allowed? ltow shall they be
connected with every other part of that train
ing to which our children ore subjected?—
These are qm stions worthy of being made
premium subjects ; questions w hich must have
a place on the catalogue of desirable thing's
till they are wisely answered.
If the thentre is demoralizing, then whnt
substitute shall he found? We reply, any
thing which is entertaining to youth mid al
so useful. The School, when it is conduc
ted on right principles, and made n delight
ful place rather than a prison. I he Lyce
um, nr any other Association for mutual im
provement, when it is prosecuted in a lively
am] interesting manner. The Conversation,
when it shall have supplanted the scandulv* s
tea-pni ty uinl tile jam. The puhhs lecture
or debate on scientific and other useful sub
jects, nr ihc social circle when enlightened
and refined, we believe may supersede thea
trical representations, nnd none hut the vi
cious will lament the change. Let schools
and Lyceums be raised to their appropriate
influence in a country village, and dissipation
will flee away. Mountebanks, nml jugglers,
and dancing-masters, and play-actors will he
off; gambling, drinking, swearing and quar
relling wdl disappear; hut nobody old or
young will lie made unhappy by tbe change*

THE NAVY OFFICERS.
It gives us great pleasure, says the l’edricks-
hurg Arena, to publish the following testimo
ny to the correct moral deportment of our Na
val Olliers on the Mediteranean station. Jt
is contained in a letter, just received, from u
friend attached to Commodore Biddle’s
Squad roll.
It gives mo great pleasure to inform you,
that 1 have found the moral character of the
(Jllicers, on the Mediteranean station, to ho
far better than w hen 1 was formerly here, or,
indeed, than 1 have known it to he any where,
since my acquaintance with the Navy. Orog
drinking und cartlplaying arc vices unknown,
or nearly so, in our squadron, llow differ
ent from the former times ! But a few yenis
hack, it was far from being generally consid
ered disgraceful hi worship at the shrine of
Bacchus, nr to waste whole nights nt the de
testable Alonte Table : And it is an incon
testable fact, tlmtsnmc of the highest officers,
liny, the very highest, iu our then squadrons,
were pre-eminently given to the aforesaid
vices. Commodore lliddle is entitled to great
praise for Ins /.cal and promptitude in thus
raising the standard of our national charac
ter, in this laud fraught with all sorts ol’
sensuality ; but, so far us I have been ubSc
tu judge in the sliurt time 1 have been up here,
I urn pcisuaded that tbe commander of tbo
squadron is, in some measure, compensated
fur tbe good lie Inis done his country, partic
ularly ns Navy, by seeing with w Imt reluc
tance those under him leave tbe Mediterra
nean station. 1lis an ubsolule truth, that it.
is a hard uiuUZf Ito find u sufficient number ol'
officers who uru willing to make up the Lex
ington’s complement, und to take her home 1
When was this ever the “case before, in our
squadrons abroad ? Wherever you hear of
much dissension and quarrelling among our
Naval officers on foreign stations—no matter
of wlmt rank—you may, nine times in ten,
set it down as conclusive, that there is some
thing wrong nlimit him, w ho lias the direction
of the whole machinery :—The mair. spring
is out of order—requires renewing ; other
wise the minor works, be they ever so good,
become useless,—ay, worse than useless,—
they injure each other.
