Capt'iiiA Crawford, of Virginia—thn amr.o who of-
terward.^, nndor t!m name of C.ilonel CrQwlord,
was taken pr'Monrr, inlimnatioly tortured, ami mur
dered hy t.lie Indiun.s—was marching a eompimy
from the frontier* of his own -tdt• ■ to the Ohio ri
ver. The occasion in not exactly known : itniiui.t
have been during ttrndd • k’n «’>:;»« 1 ii; m in LiM,
or in some of the expeditions pivvious to Dun-
inore’s'var, Avliieh occurred in 177-1. From the
furc« of the parties, \ye rather incline to the former
date. Ciawfor l’s men avi re, ol com>.’, hunters
and farmers from the ontskirU of the Virginia srt-
tl ’ments- -most probably younff, daring, hardy vol
unteers, « f the same cities as the pioneers who
shortly after tint period overrun the forests of
Kentucky; and he him*elf was a hold, enterpris
ing iimn. Ur* violin to his leaving the neighbour
hood of the settlements, Crow ford, from some ac
cident, found himself in want of th • means of trans
portation f»r some of his hnnrgnge rstores, and at
n place where ho halted in the woods fortunately
fell in with a wagoner who had stopped to rest
his horses at the same sp »t. In urn h r.n emergen*
cy, captain f’rawP-rd h it no hesitation.i:i pressing
the to^ii and its driver into the ?, rvtcc, and accor
dingly comm une .led his design to the wagoner.
'I’iie latter, highly incensed, was inclined to resist
a v lr.it he considered an oppre ssivc act; but he was
alone, in the midst of a military hand, who Avert*
ready and able, at a wdVd, to enforce their com
mander’s order. The wagoner was a great, gi
gantic, two fisted, square built fellow, who bore on
his face the marks of many n hard fought battle,
lie was, in fact, a noted bruiser. He received
f.’iMi * a'<•!>:<• ( rapt iiii Crawford’s order with an air ot grentdis-
suti.slacti'.n, and remained lor a moment silent
looking sullenly at the troop*, as if indignantly
measuring thejr striuiRl'i against his own we ak
ness. He then observed to the captain, that it
was hard to be forced to go against Ins own vvilJ.—
that every man ought to have a fair chance—that
he had not a fair chance, inasiuuel
were so great against him re to deprive him of the
power of protecting his own right. He would,
however, make a proposition, which he thought the
pt iin was hound in honour to accede to: “ I will
fight you, said lie, “or any man in your company.
If I mu whipped, I will go with you cheerfully ;
hut if I conquer, you must let me oil’,” In making
this proposal, the Avagoner allowed himself an able
nogocintor. He either knew Crawford** character,
or lie read it during the interview. The captain
was nn expert wo* wlsma n, stout, active, and chival
rous and prided himself on his personal prowess,
for wl. di lie had already obtained some celebrity.
To have declined the wagoner** challenge might
have neerned to indicate a want of manhood—it
might have lessened him in the eyes of his men—
and his own disposition and code of ethics, per
haps, suggested that the wagoner wa entitled, in
justice, to the fair rham-e which he claimed. ll<
accordingly accepted the challenge, and both pur
ties began to strip for the combat.
At this moment, a tall young man, who had re-

use any moniA he thought best to induce them to
remain ashore that night in nrderlhnt we might con
vey the property on hoard, and stow it safely away,
without their knowing any tiling of the circum
stance. He immediately assented, anti, according
ly, got rid id* the men. I reposed ent ire confidence
in him, and he appeared to deserve il : the im n, how
ever. Avert* kept ashore all night, ivhiio we. with per
fect secrecy and safety, as ivo thought, had the pro
perty conveyed to the ship, nrnl securely stowed

every tiling being taken in. we got under weigh,

1 knew not w bat to do; however, not knowing what
might he fa I me or wliat enurm* I should take. I rush-
towards tlu; deck, but my hand accidentally stri
king ngaiiuit something which I found Vi he mi A-
im ricannxe, I seised it. and the next moment was
on deck, where I saw llie helm deserted, and the
mate with the wlnde crew sitting together drinking
in tin* lore part of the ship. With the open knife in
my left hand, and the uplifted axe in my right, I
sprang in among them.nnd as mv eye met the mate’s
with one blow of the axe. I cleaved his head asun
der. Tiie men simultaneously r.me, and tied in dif
ferent directions ; I followed the nearest instantly ;
and.just as he win in the net of going aloft, I bu
ried llie nxe in hin loins, and lie fell overboard-
ccntiy joined the company, nnd was a utrnngcrto
roost of them, who had been leaning carelessly
against a tree, eyeing the scene with apparent
concern, stepped forward and drew Crawford a-
side. “Captain,” stud lie, “ you must let me fight
that man—he will whip you." Crawford was not
willing to appear to bat k out, but tin* youth insis
ted that to have the captain beaten, which would
he the result if he persisted, would tarnish the
honor of the company ; and moreover, that he him
self wns the only man who con’d whip the wn
er. The confidence of the youth, and a something
about him which inspired confidence in others, en
abled him to carry his point. Captain Crawford
having done all that policy required, in accepting
the challenge, very prudently .suffered himself t
he persuaded hy his men to let the stranger take
his place.
The t wo combatants were soon stripped and pro
pared for the fight. There wa- a great disparity
in their appearance, the odds being decidedly tn
favor of the wagoner. He was in the vigour of hi* mining .h wn, or I would fire nt him
life, big, musc'ilar, hardened by exposure, and ex- J.-ngth he came down, and fell mi low k
perienced in affairs of this kind. The youth, who, feet. I aske I him what lie had to uny of their hio.-d
xilien clod in Ins hunting shirt, seemed slender, thirsty vi I In n
led and tried tn grapple with me: hut
I. in n moment, drove the nxe in his breast, nnd he
fell at my feet. So deeply had the nxe mink into
ins body, that I wtis in imim lit danger of* bemgover-
piiw» red ; hut placing mv foot on his cheat, I hy one
vigor us effort, succeeded in ertrienting it. I now
looked around, and observing no one near me, I
went aft; but seeing here some one standing, I had
a gain lifted my axe, when a voice exclaiming, ‘For
Mod's sake, captain,’ convincing me it was the sick
gentleman, I could only say, ‘(Jo in, sir.' Unused
hy inv striking mv hand against the axe, and unhan
ging it, he had come out, and having wit in used my
actions, without knowing any thing of the cause, In*
concluded me laboring under a direful paroxism
of mndm’ss, and instantly obeyed, thankful that he
had not shared the fate of timso who had fallen be
fore his eyes.
