(.lie capture of Kuniali, the ancient capital of the
Ottoman empire. Considerable activity prevails hi
the port of Alexandria. Stocks are laid down in
various parts of the dock-yard, Pour beautiful
vessels are in the course ot constructiftn by a
French'cnignew. Two of them, the Ueirlimn &.
the St. Jean d’Acre, am three deckers, and carry
100 guns each. The Viceroy daily visits the arse
nal and encourages the workmen employed there
by promises and rewards. Sailors from all nations
arc favourably received in the Egyptian navy.
From Conslsnl<nnplr.—We lenrn by tlie ship A-
mcrica, which arrived last week from Constantino
ple, that Captain Mathews, on going-up the Arciii-
paltipo in the middle of •November, passed through
the Egvutiaii fleet, consisting of 35 sail in pursuit
of the Turkish consisting of -It). The latter came
tn anchor at tin; mouth of the Dardanelles, &. illu
minated the whole squadron, presenting a sublime
appearance. In consequence of the cowardice of!
the Turkish Admiral, ho had boon displaced, an I
the comm mil given to tiia commanding officer who
fought the battle of NavarHi'i. At the tunc of
sailing of.tho American, f'lli December, it was re
ported & believed that "(',000 mt:i had deserted the
Turkish ami joined the Egyptian Standard ; ami it
was the general opinion that miles the (Irund Sul
tan received assistance in men, and money from
the European governments, ho would be obliged to
yield to the Pacha of Egypt, and retire into Asia.
The plague bad raged violently for ubout three
weeks, during which time about 17,0(H) persons
had died. When Captain M. sailed it had nearly
subsided.
About 500 men had been employed under Mr.
Eckford at the Sultan's navy yard. .Mr. 11. bail rais
ed the wages of the workmen from 10 to 00 cents
per diem, and his death caused deep sorrow among
them.
Mr Eckford had completed the building of n
nplemlid cutter for the Sultan, which outstripped
id! tlieTurkisli vessels in sailing. He had, nt the
time oflns decease, on the stocks, a l'rigato and a
amallc vessel fir the navy of the Sultan.
The splendid corvette in which Mr. Edkford sail
ed, and which was built by him in this city,in IS31
was sold to the Sultan fir the suin of 2,700,000 pi
astres, of about $140,000. This corvette was the
fastest ship in the fleet, and was able to beat up the
Dardanelles, while the rest of the squadron were
obliged to be at anchor. There were left of the
American workmen in the yard about 15 persons,
who sailed hence with Capt. Mathews.
Mr. Eckford'.-* illness was an infl unation of the
brain, ofa fortnight's continuance, (’apt. Mathews
visited him immediately on his nrrival, at a period
of six days after Ins attack, He was then suppos
ed to be regaining his health, but next morning be
became delirious, in which state ho continued till
Ins. death, whici was considered a public calamity
by all clas-sc.--. The Sultan estimated bis charac-
i or and talents so highly, that ho frequently entered
into familiar esnvorsation with bun, a condesccn-
sir.ii which he extended to no oilier foreigner in his
dominions.—.V. Gnz.
Ki’trs of Prance.— It is a very rematkable ci”-
r umstanee, that for the sp-ten of two centuries At
upwards, the throne of France has never been 1111-
,1 liv the ton of it King. Louis tho Fourteenth
we will admit, though some deny it, to have been
the legitimate offspring of Louis the Thirteenth
and Anne of Austria. His birth lias been disputed
because his mother bore no child until after tliree-
t id-twenty years of marriage. Of his success
or’s extraction no manner of doubt can exist.—
Louis the Fifteenth was not a son of Louis the
Fourteenth, neither was Louis the Sixteenth a son
of Louis the Fifteenth. Louis thy Sixteenth had
asm, whom the Bourbons recognize as Louis the
Seventeenth, though this unfortunate prince never
ascended the throne. Napblcan Buonaparte pus-
uessed himself of tho French crown ; but he was
not even a Frenchman, much less the son of a
. ng, either indigenioua or exotic. The direct line
f this new dynasty closed with the decease of the
’.King of Rome, latterly known as Duke of llei-
vbstadt, whoschead never worn a crown. Louis
"ns Eighteenth succeedod tho Corsican, but nei-
icr lie, nor his brother and successor, Charles the
.cntli, were sons of a king; bothjjwere [brothers
rf the decapitated sovereign. Charles has a son,
who has been excluded from the throne, arid a
pnr.dson, who shares his present doom. Their
liu, Louis Fhillippe, has been raised ever their
; ids. Out is not a king's son.
