no means new It tvas urged with great confidence
against the construction of the Erie Canal, and ruin
was confidently predicted to the finances of the stale,,
should the legislature embark its interests in that

portions of the work may, if separately considered,
fail to remunerate for their Construction, yet the in
creased mileage of the remote trade on the more fre
quented portions of the work will more than com
pensate for the deficiency.
The importance of this view of the subject, and*

From the late French Paper.
The Police of Paris arc nt this moment eugu
in tracing out evidence of a murder which was f smi t | |(
perpetrated so long ago as 1821. The following
are die circumstances of this very extraordinary
case. A widow named lionet residing in the cap
ital, and who was reputed to the worth between
L")0,000 and ‘-200,000 francs, married her daughter
to a man named Robert, but she soon afterwards
quarrelled with him ami saw him but seldom. One
morning when about to make her coffee, she was
suddenly called out to an unknown person, and
from that moment disappeared and was never af
terwords heard of. Suspicions of her murder fell
up ii h r son in law IT-h* rt. nnd lie (\as taken into
custody ; hut was soon afterwards discharged for
want *<f evidence. Some fresh circumstances tend
ing to his inculcation having come out in L V ‘2 I, Ro
bert. was again arrested, and an indictment was
preferred against him; hut the Chnmhrc des miscs
rn accusation did net deem there was sufficient
d "ice to put him on his trial, and lie once more
,-'Wiped. The limited period of ten years from
r•last proceedings, within which term prosecu-
• according to the laws of France, must be
!it to an issue, was fast elapsing when a sin
incident again revived the pursuit. Atiothe
aid any thing. After several unsuccessful at
tempts to make him understand, she met him one
day on the stairs, and oiler making the usual in
quiry, and receiving the usual answer, she hastily
replied, “ well ! think iVs lime you had.” Matthew
could not avoid taking the hint, and a short time
after, they became one of the must happy and res
pectable couples in Connecticut.”—A*. K. Weekly

For the accuracy of that part of the foregoing
anecdote which is presented for amusement we do
not vouch. That Mrs Griswold was a holy of su
perior intellect, and of great signcity is unques
tionable—nnd that talents and genius are not un-
frequently transmissible from generation to genera
tion, may be inferred from the fact that she formed
a link of connection between the tw<> ‘families
mentioned, w hich, between the years 1751 ami |
1817, furnished five out of eleven governors of that i
State, who boro to her the respective relations ofl
father, husband, brother, son ami nephew. They
were all distinguished for unbending integrity and
exalted talents. Her father was the lion. Roger,
Wolcott—her husband is named in the anecdote

Hon. Roger Griswold, uud In r nephew,
the lion. Oliver Wolcott, the younger, who died
in this city a few days since. One of her uncles,
the Hon. Erastus Wolcott, was Lieutenant Gov
ernor of that State, and the late Alexander Wol
cott, Esq. who was nominated by President Madi
son to ben Judge of the Supreme Court of the U.

We will, f»r the sake of numerical exactness,-
further suppose these districts to be each ten miles
square, and the equal products or travel of each to’
he drawn to the several railways at points which
shall average the mileage at that which is the com
mon centre of each district. It is obvious that the -
average distance which the products will be carried
on each railway, is five miles ; nnd if the total'
amount of tonnage or passengers he 5,000 in each
district, it will, nt one dollar per ton or passenger
for this distance, amount to 5,000 dollars. If we
now take the aggregate of the inn railroads in the*
several districts, estmi/»»ed by the same rule, the ng-
gregatp eoiii|ieimntimi or nir.-one fi*r the 11)1) miles of
railroad will amount to $50,000. This is a fair ex*
llihition of the operation of railways in single inso-
lated districts, each leading to its separate local mar
ket.
We w ill now examine the effect of a continuous'
railway through the same number of districts of,
like dimensions, nnd furnishing a like amount nf
tonnage or passengers, the entire length of railway
being the same ns before, but leading to a common
market nt tlie termination of the tier of districts, St*

mg pleasure of thin life, and thnt uh far as lean ob

3d Knowledge,—for llie little knowledge I have,
I find I would not sell al any rale, nor part w ll It for
any other pleasure.
4th. Doing good,—for I find the well-cooked meat

diseased after a full meal ; tho perfumes I smelt
