letters written front Cairo at the moment of my

and it was granted me to tin unexpected extent.
The Hinder of the household invited mo to sit
down iu the midst of them; the women eyed
me from bend to foot with great wonder, hut
without the lenst appearance of apprehension.
The husband soon brought me some dates and
water, which, though nut good, was more de
lightful tojuy taste than tho most exquisite li
quor l ever drunk. I had a few trinkets ami
skeins of .ilk of w hich I made presents to the
female*. Thi* wits sufficient to establish me in

with the greatest nfleetioit. I became much at
tached to them, regarding mid behaving to those
amiable women as sisters, kissing their children

witlt fierce looks, eyes full of fire, ami very lit

of their hoilie*. The women especially, who
nre very lively, trace handsome drawings iu
blue black upon the lieliy, under the breasts, nml
on other parts of their person. They stain the
gums black, and have a spot of the same color
on the lower lip. All the men have black hair,
curled, and hanging down behind, resembling a

length below tho shoulders, aud always greased,
which defends them against thu heat of the sun.
