The advantage totbe Company in, that all the stork-
bolder* will be interested in gutting work for tbo Con.
pnny’s office, nml that each stockholder will always give
u preference to the Company's papernnd the Companv’s
books over those ol other makers nml publisbcis. Stirl’
nn nrrangrmcnt with the booksellers will enable the
Company, by menus of a ritcularaddressed to them or
respondents, enclosing the report of their committee of
publication, to know bow mnuv copies of any new book
cun bn sold, and thus protect them against all loss by
ascertaining in advance if a (imposed work eau be Fold’-
fi>r if it cannot be sold, the Company will i.ot jiiiut it. 1
Thus the intercts of authors, publishers nml bookfellers
will be reconciled, by erduting n ceminunity in w |,K li
(lie rights of caeli will be secured, the public benefited
by the introduction ol’ti uniform aeries of improved scliool
books, and the South protect! d against tlie introduction
of any matter tontliug in the moot remote degree to as
sail our institution* uml property. And when we take
into consideration the fact dun these uro now held ngainrt
tbo prejudices of the world—that a society with more
than five hundred auxiliary associations spi’ead over nin
ny ofthc States of this Union, vvitb immense sums for
the. gratuitous distribution of tracts uud numuhlets, have
declared universal emancipation,rememner tlie influence
which curly impressions have on the matured mind, nil
must see the importance of guarding against the ntlinis-
sion into our elementary books of any matter which may
mislead the feeling or judgment.
Inasmuch us the sale of sc bool books is much greater,
and the value and profit depends much more ou the pub
lisher, the Company n ill divide the profit with the au
thor or eonmileroii all elementary books. Tliisamngc-
mentw ill place nil author* uud compilers on the sanm
footing ; and inasmuch ns the Company w ill imve no
interest in the cony-right beyond a contract for the exclu
sive right topuhlish until a'better or improved beak is
produced by some oilier author, tho Company willbf al
