FOURTEENTH VOLUME

KNICKERBOCKER MAGAZINE.
la asking atttentioa to tlte new Volume of the Kricreh-
BorKCR Maoaxine, which commences on the first of July,
1839, the Proprietors do not deem it necessary to any more,
than that tha ardent endeavors which have marked their course
in the past, will bn continued in the future. That these exer
tions will lie even more successful then heretofore, with the
addition to their previously liberal literary resourees uf auch
liens as ilnwe rl Washington Irving, Fitx-Green IIaL-
lrcb, 1 Box,' Handtkson, the 'American in Paris,' etc. not lo
sneak of numerous others, tlrere uinhe little reason to donbl.
Moreover, the gratifying personal influence and interest of
most of these di*iine*uished writers, iu eliciting contributions
from minds of kindred eminence, at home and abroad, may
with certaintv Im* reli«d upon. With 'base remarks, i: re
mains hut to re terst**, that as tire KNlcxrnnocRRR has twaeli-
ed its kourtkkr rM volume, with n number of readers larger,
by many hundreds, than nt any previous period, the fact may
pcrlmps be deemed decisive evidence of lire nature of its
claims upor the public fever; yet as the present advertise
ment of n new volume will go before many person* who have
been unable to judge of the rliaiartcr of the work from its
performances, it is deemed advisable Irere. to recapitulate a
few of the prominent qualities which it is believed have char-
ai’tertred it, under it* present proprietary and literary direc
tion. It has presented to the public articles unon erience and
tlie arts, which have excited attention ubroad as well aa at
home; interesting .tales, lllu%lrating American society, the
times, tnamrer*, etc.; entertaining records ol traiel, foreign
red domestic; original European and American corretpon-
jlence t humorous stories and sketches, with tales ol the see.
of painoe, end of real life ; legends and essays, upon mime*
musand varied themes; the whole interspersed with frequent
articles of poetry, which it ia believed have generally dent nr
ed tire name.
In looking back over the post volumes, there will be found t
mingled with a large predominance of entertaining and in
structive light reading, adorned with tbe airy and graceful or
naments of mirth and hutnor, original papers of a more solid
character, upon upward of sixty different important subjects.
These have proceeded, nmiuly, from person*, native or fo
reign, who have either cultivated science with distinguished
success, or from others, sexrceiy less eminent, who have de
voted their leisure to useful and elevated compositions. The
brevity and itvle of these papers, it U conceived, have been
such as to invite all to read with little labor and oome plea
sure, and to impress every reader, more favorably and lasting
|y, titan graver and more elaborate disquisitions; refreshing
the minds of the learned, the curious, aud the reflecting; awa
kening curiosity, and stimulating inquiry in the young; and
exciting in all, train* of profitable reflection, and giving stimu-
lous to thought. The Magazine has aimed to roach nearly
every division of general literature, and to comprehend, in ita
ample though transient sorvey, amusement and instruction,
letters and arts; customs and manners; the peculiarities ol
individuals, and the movements of society. In short, the di
vine, the moralist, end the statesmen; the humorous observer
and interpreterof nature; the poet and the noveliat.have made
the Knickerbocker the repository of their various treasures.
Our republic ia distinguished, perhaps above every other
country, for the uniform and universal education and intelli
gence of its inhabitants. Men versed in all tbe minute and
profound erudition of the Europeans, are indeed rare; but
from the poorest laborer to the chief magistrate, with few ex-
options, all are able to read, and all deaire to know. Univer-
illy devoted tobusinesaof some kind, end obliged todepeud
„n their industry or enterprise for support, they hays little lei
sure for laborious investigation; but to their honor be it *po
ken, thev cherish a relish for literature and works of taste; and
a periodical which contributes to tbe satiafacliou of this *r~~
tite.may fsirlv lay claim to be considered as productive ol
highest usefulness.
Among the many writers who have contributed original ar
ticles to this Magsxine. front iu comiuencemc.it, including
matter in store for the thirteenth volume, will be found.the fol.
lowing: and it may well be Questioned, whether toy periodi
cal. native or foreign, can exhibit a more distinguished galaxy
