than that the ardent endeavors wt-irh have marked their courai

i ss tho c nl Washington Ik vino, Fitz-Gskin II At.-
t,• Bos,’ Banutp.-os, the 'American in Pori*,’ etc. not to
snenk of numerous oth» r«. there ean be little reason to doubt.
Moreover, the gratifxiuc personul influence and interest of
most nf these distinguished writer*, in eliciting contributions
front minds nf kindred eminence, nt home and abroad, may
with certainty be relied upon. With these remarks, it re
main* but to ro terate, that aa the Knickerbocker has reach
ed its rounTAr.NTH volume, with a number nf readers larger,
by many hundreds, than at any previous period, the fact may
perhaps be deemed decisive evidence of the nature of its
claims upor the public favor; vet as tho present advertise
nient of a new volume will go before many persons who have
been unable to judge of the chatncter ol tfie work from its
performances, it is deemed advisable here, to recapitulate a
lew of the prominent qualities w hich it i* believed have c har
acterised it, under ita present proprietary and literary direc
tion. It ha* presented to the public articles upon science and
the arts, which have excited attention abroad aa well nn nt
home ; interesting Jules, illustrating American society, tlte
times,’manners, etc.; entertaining records ot travel, foreign

of pathos, an.l of real life ; legends and essays, upon nume
rous and varied theme*; the whole interspersed with frequent
article* of poefry, which it ia believed have geuerally deserv

In looking hack over the past volumes, there will be found,
mingled with a large predominance of entertaining and in
structive light rending, adorned with the airy and graceful or
naments of mirth nnd humor, original papers of o more solid
chnrnctcr.upon upward of sixty different important aubjeets.
These have proceeded, mninlv, from persons, native or fo
reign, who have either cultivated science with distiiiguinbed
success, or from others, scarcely less eminent, who have de
voted their leisure to useful and elevated compositions. The
brevity und ftvle of these papers, it i* conceived, have been
such as to invite all to rend with little labor nnd some plea-
ire, and to impress every render, more favorably and lasting
Iv, than graver and more elaborate disquisition* ; refreshing
the minds of the learned, th# curious, and the reflecting; awa
kening curiosity, snd stimulating inquiry in the young; and
exciting in all, trains of profitable reflection, and giving ntimu-

inimiuusm, oii^ thc movement* of society. In short, the di
vine, the moralist, and the statesman ; the humorous observer
and interpreter of nature ; the peel and the novelist, have inado
the Knickerbocker the repository of their various treasures.
Our republic i* distinguished, perhaps above every other
country, for the uniform and universal education nnd intelli
gence of its inhabitants. Men versed in all the minute and
profound erudition of the Europeans, are indeed rare; but
from the poorest laborer to the chief magistrate, with few ex-
R lions, all are able to read, und all desire to know. L'niver-
y devoted to business of some kind, and obliged todepend
on tlieir industry or enterprise for support, thev nave little lei
sure for laborious investigation; but to their honor be it spo
ken, they cherish n relish for literature and work* of taste; and
a periodical which contributes to the satisfaction of this appe
tite, may fairlv lay claim to be considered as productive of the
highest UBcfulness. ....
Among the many writers who have contributed original ar
ticles to this Magazine, from its commencement, including
matter in store for the thirteenth volume, will he found the fol
lowing; and it may well be questioned, whether any periodi
cal, native or foreign, can exhibit a more distinguished gulaxy
of high and various talent :J

been fairly tried, and that trial having full* demonstrated it,«
feasibility «f Die undertaking, public attention ia Incoming
everv day more alive to it; aud fond anticipaiions are already
indulged, of the time when our ahanooned and won,out nlsn-
tntion* shall ngain be cultivated, and better than ever rewar t
the labor l*e*lowed upon them. To him .who haa * patriotic
attachment for the sotl on which he waa horn and nurtured
and who looks unon the tide of emigration that is ever setting
from the old to the new Htntrs, as not only a drain upon our
wonlth, but destructive to the delights ot social intcreourso
and the growth of early friendship*, anv scheme which shall
tend to lessensuch emigration, and plant om people more con-
tejtedly and firmly amid the scenes of their childhood, willbo
favorably regarded. And we are fullv persuaded that the
production of silk, if generally engaged in, will do mure than
anything else can do, to increase our wealth and preserve our
population.
Entertaining these views, wc propose to lend our feeble aid
in the dissemination of practical information on this subject,
confidently believing that an intelligent community need only
have suitable facts presented for their consideration, to satisfy
them that the road to wealth is a* open to them here, as in any
of the fertile regions of the NVest.
NVcnre aware that several valuable and ably conducted
publications exist ut the North, devoted to the interests of the
Bilk Culture, snd that we shall bring but little practical infor-
motion to the task we have imposed upon ourself. But it
seems to U9 that a work which should record the results of
tioutkern experience, which should contain information
adapted to the peculiarities of our soil and climate, and which
should nt the same time include a selection from the most va|.
uablc articles in the Northern periodicals, with an account of
nil new improvement* iu the mode of constructing cocooneries,
fixtures, reels, file, in Europe and America, would he found’
eminently useful. With these feelings, we commend our en
terprise to the patronage of the public, promising that no ef-
fort* shall be spared on our part, to render it a work both in
teresting nod iiHcful.
It may be proper here to remark, that although the silk cul
ture is tho primary object wo hope to aid, we design to intro
duce other articles connected with Agriculture generally
with a view to disseminate such valuable information as ms*
meet the wants and advance the intereeta of practical farmers

■ystein of Agriculture, Rs use will be extremely limited.

Agriculturalists of distinctions have been secured aa corres
pondents, whose commonicatioufl will monthly enrich the
