1839, the Proprietors do not deem it necessary to say more,
than that the ardent endeavors which have marked their coarse
in the past, will he continued in the future. That these exer
tions will he even more successful thnu heretofore, with the
addition to their previously liberal literary resource* of such
pen* ns those of Washington Irvixo,'Fite-Green Hal-
lrc k, * Boy.,’ Sanpirson, the 'American in Paris,' etc. not to
«r»enk of numerous others, there c«n be little reason to doubt.
Moreover, the gratifying personal influence end interest of
most of these distinguished writers, in eliciting contributions
from minds of kindred eminence, nt home and abroad, may
with certainty |»e relied upon. With these remarks, it re
main* hut tore terate.thrvt as the Knickerbocker ha* reach
ed its roURTRKNTN voi.ttME, with a number of readers larger,
by many hundreds, than at any previous period, tha fact mav
perhaps he deemed decisive evidence of the nature of it*
claims upor the public favor; vet ns the present advertise
ment of a new volume will go before nmov persons who hav«.
been unable to judge of the character of' tne work from its
performances, it is deemed advisable here, to recapitulate a
few of the prominent qualities which it is believed have char
acterized it, under its present proprietary and literary direc
tion. It has presented to the public articles upon science and
the art*, which have excited attention abroad as well aa at
home ; interesting tiles, illustrating American society, live
times, manners, etc.; entertaining records ol travel, foreigt
and domestic.; original European and American correspoti
dencc: humorous stories and sketches, with tales of the sea,
of pathos, and of real life ; legends and essays, upon nitmo-
rom and varied themes; tho whole interspersed with frrquen'
articles of poetry, which it is believed have generally deserv
ed the name.
In looking bnck over the past volumes, there will be found,
mingled with a larre predominance of entertaining and in
structive light reading, adorned with the airy and graceful or
naments of mirth and humor, original papers of a more solid
character, upon upward of sixty different important subjects.
These have proceeded, mainly, from persona, native or fo
reign, who have either cultivated science with distinguished
success, or from others, scarceiy lens eminent, who have do-
voted their leisure to useful and elevated compositions. The
brevity und style of the«e paper*, it i* conceived, have been
such ns to invite all to read with little labor and somo plea
sure, aud to impress every reader, more favorably and lasting
Iv, tiiau graver Hnd more elaborate disquisitions; refreshing
the minds of the learned, the curious, and the reflecting; owu-
kening curiosity, and stimulating inquiry in the young; and
exciting in all, trains of profitable reflection, ami giving stimu-
Ions to thought. The Magazine has aimed tu roach nearly
every division of general literature, and to comprehend, in its
nmple though trunsient Purvey, amusement and instruction;
letter* and arts; customs and manners; tho peculiarities of
individuals, and the movements of society. Iu short, tho di
vine, the moralirtt, and the statesman; the humorous observer
nnd interpreternf nature ; the poet atid the novelist, hnve made
the Knickerbocker the repository of their various treasures.
Our republic ia distinguished, perhaps above everv other
country, fur the uniform and universal education atuf intelli
gence of its inhabitants. Men versed in all the minute and
profound erudition of the European*, are indeed rare; hut
from the poorest laborer to the chief magistrate, with few ex
ceptions, all are able to read, nnd all desire to know. Univer
sally de uied to business of some kind, and obliged todepend
on ftieir industry or enterprise for support, thev have little lei
sure for laborious investigation; but to their honor be it npo-
ken, they cherish a relish for literature and works of taste; and
a periodical which contributes to the satisfaction of this appe
tite, may fairlv lay claim to be considered as productive of the
highest usefulness.
Among the many writers who hnve contributed original ar
ticles to this Magazine, from its commencement, including
matter in store for the thirteenth volume, will he found the fol
lowing j and it may well lie questioned, whether any periodi
cal, native or foreign, can exhibit a more distinguished galaxy
of high und various talent :|

PROSPECTUS OF THE
SOUTHERN SILK GROWER,
AND AGRICULTURAL REGISTER,
To be published monthly al Athens, Georgia;
BY ALBOX CHASK.
B Y the solicitation of several friend* who feel a deep inter
est ii: the success of the Silk business nt the 8outh, we
linve been induced lo propose the establishment of a small pe
riodical mainly devoted to that subject. Tho experiment of
raising the food and renting the worm in this climate having
tieen fairly tried, and that trial having fully demonstrated the
feasibility of the undertaking, public nttcntioii is Iwcoiuing
everv day more alive to it; and fond anticipations arc already
indulged,'of the time when our nbauooncd and wornnut plan
tations shall again be cultivated, and better than ever reward
the labor bestowed upon them. To him who has a patriotic
attachment for tho soil on which he was born and nurtured,
and who looks upon the tide of einigrntiun that ia ever setting
front the old to the new 8tntes, ns not only n drain upon our
wealth, hut destructive to the delights of social intercourse
and the growth of early friendships, anv scheme which shall
tend to lessensuch emigration, and plant our people more con
tentedly atid firmly amid the scenes of their childhood, will b#
favorably regarded. And we are fully persuaded that tha
production of silk, if generally engaged in, will do mure than
any thing else can do, to increase our wealth and preserve our
population.
Entertaining these views, we propose to lend our feeble aid
in tho dissemination of practical inhumation on this subject,
confidently believing that an intelligent community need only
of the fertile regions of the West.
Wears aware thnt several valuable and ably conducted
publications exist at the North, devoted to the interest* of the
8ilk Culture, and that we shall bring but little practical infor
mation to the task we have imposed upon ourself. Rut it
seams to us thnt a work which should record the results ot
Southern experience, which should contain information
adapted to the peeutiarities of our soil and climate, and which
nhnuld at the same time include a selection from lire most val-
uuL.t* articles in tho Northern periodicals, with an account of
all new improvements in the mode of constructing cocooneries,
fixtures, reels. Ate. in Europe and America, would be found
eminently useful. With these feelings, we commend our en
terprise to the patronage of the public, promiring that no ef
forts shall be spared on our part, to render it a work buth in
teresting and useful.
lure ia tho primary object we hope to aid, we design to intro
duce other urtiefes connected with Agriculture generally
with a view to disseminate such valuable information ns may
meet the wants and advance the interests of practical fanners.
Tp.rms.—The Southern Silk Ghowi.h and Aokicul-
tuhai. Rroixtkk, will be issued about the first of every
mouth, nnd each number will contain 8 royal quarto pages—
printed on good paper and lair type. It wfll he afforded at the
low rate of ONE DOLLAR per year, iu order that all who
choose mav be aide to ohtnin it. Eleven copies w ill lie fur
nished for$IO; and a similar deduction made for larger sub
scriptions.
Inconsequence of the extremely low price at which the
work is offered, we cannot afford to open account*—all who
subscribe, therefore, will he expected to pay in advance ; and
should it not he commenced, tho subscription money will l>e
refunded.
Holders of subscription paper* are desired to send in tha
names of the Nuhscribcrs obtained, before ihe first of Septem
ber next, ns soon after which as arrangements can he made, it
is proposed to commence the publication.
