SUSPENSION BY THE BANKS OP SPECIE PAY

Our readers will find below that in different places
the Hanks have suspended Specie Payun iit for their
li.il . Ancmmeut statesman propluu ied, tint tho “rc-
bumption” winch took place about fourteen months ago,
would most certainly be followed, in less than two year »
by anotlior 11 suspension” which, in itn ennaequonceat
would be most disastrous to the country. 11 is prophe
cy, so far as the “ suspension” is concerned, is about to
l»e immediately fulfilled, Ero another week shall roll
around, not a Jhnk in the whole country will pay speed*
Or its hills. That the consequence of this .-tale of things
is to prove “ disastrous” we are not prepared to say. ()
on • thug v.*e are certain. Money the people must have.
Not o:;ly tho people, but tho State must have money.
It by the Kuycnsiott tliat ui about to ensue, the pre

v.ho would not be willing to ace an indulgence extended
by the Legislature, ami the people, to our State Institu
tions! Certainly we should ! Many ofour interior Banks
have, no doubt, been much oppressed by tho exactions ot
tlm r sister Institutions located in other sections of the
State ; and we have been pleased to f ee, that, notwith
standing tho oppressions which they* have borne, they
were not theJirs! torefu.-. rpce i. for their bills. During
tho pia sent suspension, m y we not h i •, that the lesson
which many of them have already 1 .arnod, will enabie

pursuing this course, they will have the confidence of
the people,—otherwise, and they cannot but expect that
retributive justice will, though late, bo fairly dealt out to
them all. Our readers may expect to hear from us
.again upon this important subject.
Among the sus|N?nsions, we observe the following :
All the Hanks of Philadelphia, Baltimore am! Richmond,

New York, Bank of Virginia and Farmers’ .Bank, at
Norfolk, the Banks of Alexandria, Washington and

MR. FLOURNOY.
l a our article of last week on the subject of the late
Elect.on, \\*e used the remark in substance that the do-
feat of Judge Dougherty was attributable to the “teal”
of Mr. Flournoy. It appears hy tho communication
which we publish below signed “ a Friend of Justice,’*
that our remarks have been misunderstood; or other
wise that we did not express the idea clearly that vve
meant to convey to our readers. In either case, wo em
brace the present opportunity of correcting any wrong
impressions which our article may have created in the
minds of any. We tim ly meant to convey the idea
that the “ teal of this < xman” Mr. Flournoy, in fa
vour of a repeal of the bee n*, law, had creahd an ex
citement throughout, the country, which the Van Buren
Party took advantage ef t by ih--daring it !,*. a . o-
uieiii oi the State Rights Party, lode teat Judge Dough
erty ; and not that the “zeal” of Mr. Flournoy had
induced him to lake sides against either candidate whilst
engaged in the cause of the “ Repeal.” We give } lace
to “ A Card to Correct an Error” with pleasure. Ema
nating from the source which it does, (an honorable and
high minded political opponent,) we cannot n conclusion
refrain from observing, that it «ho OPPOSITION had
pursued his magnanimous course throughout the lr.te
canvass, a different result would have been tho conse
quence. The frail tenure, however, on which they have
to rely for support, and hy which they have ridden into
power, has already snapped asunder, and in the “ sober
second thought” of the nullifiers of Georgia, do we con
fidently look for that ro-action which shall, at tho next
election, again give back the State into the keeping of
that party whom defeat canuo* dismay, and whom adver
sity on’y prompts to unity of action, determination of
purpose, and the most rigid perseverance until victory
smiles propitious, and our opjionents be again humbled
by defeat.
A CARD TO CORRECT AN ERROR.
To the Editin'* of the. (Seorgia ./■ urnal :
Gentlemen :—In determining the causes which haw
h d to tho defeat of Judge Dougherty’s elect.on, may
you not have hastily, and therefore improperly ascribed
it to the zeal of Mr. Flournoy. This gentleman lias not
concerned himself with eith r of th * candidates for
Governor, and whenever he h: s h id occasion to sponl:
of persons as hnv .ligsigw t lie memorial, it was equally
• '! belli part cs ; and the ?i:.11:*• of Judge Dougherty has
never been use 1 by h m, in conn, x.ou w.th it. If, hew-
evei, thu Judge’s defeat has been pr n >d hy mdiistly
id litify ing :Jte .State Rights Party with the petition, you
will readily allow that it was the work of the oupoi't
yarly, and nut of Mr. Flournoy, for l know that he lias
studiously attempted to avoid its connection with either
political party* My long acquaintance with this gentle
man enables me to say, that he is not in the habit of
meddling with party politics, and you may safely rely
tint he never will. You will readily perceive the del;,
racy of Mr. F’s position, in having the defeat of either
of the candidates thus ascribed to him. And an the
above construction of the causes, which in part l«*d to
the defeat in question, w ould, while it is ju-t, at the same
time avoid that sort of personality, to which 1 am con
scious you arc averse, both as gentlemen, and .as public
journalists—may I not therofoie, in common with the
mum rous friends of Mr. Flournoy, confidently rely upon
your concurrence. A Friend ok Justice.
The Van Buren party will have a majority in both
branches ot the Legislature. If the counties to be heard
from, do as they did last year, our calculation is, after
giving them nil the doubtful members, that they will
havo a majority of I'd in the Senate, and 17 in the House.
Enough to enable them to do pretty much as they
please. In tho election fr Governor, there are but two
counties to be heard from. Tim ac.cou..ts already re.

Dear Sir:—I have to inform you that in all of this

In tins county they were detected, through tic vc -

the inorn.ng of the election, tho polls were opened at

were opened. This was t ot suspected at the time, until
the subsequent conduct of tho super.ntend nts excited
suspicion. But we were determined to watch ?h !rpro

plan was to slip or destroy as many State Rigli's v >tes,
ns they had put in Van Buren w;t< s before the p ills were

votes polled correspond with the number oi voters’
