and latterly by Wm. W. Carnes, as a Tavern, where he hits

houses. To auit the pressure nf the times, his charges shall

PROSPECTUS OF THE
SOUTHERN SILK GROWER,
AND AGRICULTURAL REGISTER,
To be published monthly at Athens, Georgia;
HY Al.BON CHASE.
B Y ihe solicitation of several friends who feel a deep inter
est iu the success uf the Silk business at thn South, we
have been induced to propose the establishment of a small pe
riodical mainly devoted to that subject. The experiment of
raising the fund ami rearing the wurin in this climate having
been fairly tried, and that trial having fully demonstrated the
feasibility of the undertaking, public ntte'ution is Incoming
every dny more alive to it; uud fond anticipations are already
indulged, of the time when our abanomied and vvornout plan
tation* shill again be cultivated, uud better thuu over reward
the labor bestowed upon them. To him who has a patriotic
attachment for the soil on which lie was born mid nurtured,
ami w ho looks uimuthe tide of emigration that is ever setting
from the old to the new Htates, ns not only a drain upon our
wealth, hut destructive to the delights of social intercourse
and the growth of early friendships, anv scheme which shall
tend to lessen such emigration, und plant our people mure con
tviitcdlv mid firmly amid the scenes of their childhood, w ill bo
fnvorahly regarded. And wc nrc tulIv persuaded that the
production of silk, if generally engaged in, will do more than
uny thing else can do,to increase our wealth ami preserve our
population.
Entertaining these views, we propose to lend our feeble aid
in the dissemination of practical iuloi mat ion on this subject,
confidently believing that an intelligent community need only
have suitable fuel* presented for their consideration, to sHtislv
them that the road *o wealth is a* open fo them here,as iu any
ofthe fertile regions of the West.
We are aware that several valuable nml ably conducted
publications exist at the North, devoted to the interests ofthe
Hilk (’ulture, and that we susll bring but little practical infor
mation lo the tusk we have imposed upon ourself, llut it
that a work which should record the results
Southern experience, which should contain information
adapted to the peculiarities of our soil and climate, mid which
should at the rulin' time include a selection from the moat val
uable articles in the Northern periodicals, w ith sn account of
all new improvements in the mode uf constructing cocooneries
fixtures, reels, foe. in Europe mid America, would be found
eminently useful. With these feelings, we commend our cn*
terprioe to the patronage of the public, promising that no ef
forts shnll he spared on our part, to render it a work bulb in
teresting and useful-
It may he proper here to remark, that although the silk cul
ture i* the primary object we hope to aid, we design lo intro
duce oilier articles connected with Agrienltuie generally
with a view to disanminalo am ll valuable information ns may
meet the wants and advance the interests of practical farmers
