Mr. Cimpcr rays that tho Dill ol 1S12 is more* obnox
ious than the act ol 1829, because “tea and coffee h**re-
tolbro freed for ihmr hem li*, is now ta.c:d.” Wlmt
consummate hypocrisy. List week, lie admitted, in a
letter to the Federal Union, llint he had voted against
making tho article of tea free!
Why did not Mr. Cooper tell tho people the truth,
d say that the act of 1929 did impose the duties 1
have stated. Turn to Ins document, and you w.ilseo
the duties there laid down. But the reason is obvious.
These heavy duties were’ first imposed hy tho act ol
1810 ; for them John C. Calhoun and It. M. Johnson,
two of his candidates for President, and Albert Cntli
but and Wilson Lumpkin voted. The same duties
were continued by the* act of 1924. For this, Andrew
Jackson, M. Van B'-trcn, Jus. Buchanan, S.lus Wright,
and Thus. II. Benton, the leaders of his party, voted.—
They were rc-adopted in 1828, mid for this these same
niletncn, except Gen. Jackson, voted. Here is the
reason.
What ought to be thought of a representative, who
would thus attempt to deceive the people, hy such wil
ful misrepresentations ! I am done with him for the
present. Let him expiaiu these tniaroprcsentaiion?, if
lie can, and then there an* sumo others to which l will
invite his attention.

On the other hand, the party with which we act, plac.

lit the Revolution it was a very significant term, and hon

by those who desire to effect a revolution of nnothe r

our ancestors. With that, and Stale Rights, and the

day—when capitalists and money lenders are availing
themselves of the distresses of tho hour, in order to make
exhorhitant g lins, it is really refreshing and cheering to
th'* heart, to be enabled 10 record the following noble
act of g' nerositv, which has recently transpired in our
good o ! d neighbouring State of North Carolina.
In the “fresh,” which lately overflowed and devas
tated a large portion of the Roanoke county, not only
ilic growing crops were utterly swept away, but large
quantities of old corn were destroyed in the barns,
carrying distress to all around. Tho immediate clK-ct
