A Moxtcr.Y anii ms Tt»t;MKNToit8.—In tlie
jungles about Tihicherry, there is a large species
of monkey, frequently lamed by (lie natives, uml
at a villngi* a short distance from litis celehiatcd
sea pm l, we had an evidence ol the ivmurknbh) sn--
gaeity of this itttimal. A few yards from the houso
ol the person to whom it belonged, a thick pole, at
least thirty leet high, Intd been lived into (It • earth,
round vvlin'Ii was an iron ring, and to this attached
a strong chain of considerable length, fastened to
a hand round the moukev’s body. The ring being
loose, it slid along the polo when lie ascended or
descended. I lo was in the habit of taking his sta
tion upon the top of the bamboo, where he perched
as if to enjoy tin? benu.ies of the prospect around
him. The crows, which in India are very abun
dant ami Hngu.nriy au.l i. i ms, taking advantage of
his elevated position, had been robbing him of Ilia
food, vvhiclt was placed every morning nnu evening
at tin* loot of the polo. To this lie had vainly ex
pressed his dislike by chattering, and other indica
tions of bis displeasure equally iiiellectijal; but tiny
continued their periodical depredations. Finding
that lie was perfectly unheeded, lie adopted a plan
of retribution as ellcctual as it was ingenious. Ono
morning, when Ins tormentors had been particular
ly troublesome, ho appeared as if seriously indis
posed; In* closed his even, dropped his head, nml
exhibited various other sv niptoms of severe suffer

ing their opportunity, descended in great numbers,

was still, however, some remaining, which a solita

of the monkey, advanced toseuv*. The wily crea

Wo copy the following'information, respecting
tho custom lions" robbery in New Orleans, frum
tho New Orleans Tropic of 1st amt 2i inst.
CJRHAT ROBBERY.
No inconsiderable degree of sonsation has been
earned in this city by the disclosure of the fact that
our custom house lias been robbed of an immense
sum of money. Tlie particulars of the case, os
they have cornu to our knowledge, arc nu fol
lows :
On the 20th of July last, more than nine mouths
ago, a package containing one hundred and thirty
thousand dollars in United Stile* Treasury Notes,
was Nciat, by mail, from tho Custom-house to the
Treasury Department at Washington. The puck-
age, it appears, never reached its destination, and
during the past week uu agent from tha Treasury
iJjiortmcnt, churgod with tho business of investiga
tion, has arrived in tins eity. He has boon busily en
gaged in probing the affair to the bottom, but m»
yet tho rebull of his labors has not boon made known
Enough Inis transpired, however, to render it quite
curtain that tho money did not leave tho city. It
seems that the Treasury notes when received here
ure murked "cancelled" across the face, in order
to prevent their further circulation, in case of ac-
cidout. If the notes in the missing package were
so marked, tho murks did not accomplish tho pur-
pone intended, for the records of tlie custom house,
show, wo are informed, tha^KOine of the identical
notes comprising that package have again been
received hero und forwarded to Washington !
Altogether, the husines* is very mysterious and
difficult of solution. That a pretty extensive
scheme of rascality lias been consummated, i*
jiiiK! clear, Imii upon whom suspicion should lull is
another affair. It is presumed that tho secret rests
between the custom house and the post office, and
that the villaoy was pci potrated by some person or
pc rums familiar with the mode of conducting bust
IK'ss in both of those establishments. Some light
will be shad on the affair, it may be anticipated, in
the course of the next few days. A robbery of
such magnitude cannot liuvo been committed with
out leaving somu traces that will lead to detec
tion.
THE CUSTOM HOUSE ROBBERY.
We hoar that a clue to the stupendous piece ofvil-
laity which has caused so much excitement in this
city, during the last few days, has been discovered,&
that a strong probability exis s that the perpetrator
of the robbery will be discovered and arrested. In
this state of affairs, it is no more than fair lliut tho
public should withhold its judgment, and patiently
await dovelopoments. The Collector of tlie port
will most undoubtedly exonerate himself from all
blame. We arc informed likewise that there is
good proof that the missing package was never do
pestled in the post office, in the course of a few
days, there is good reason to believe lite whole
mutter will be made known

except the mnirl servant, who vvns not at home tho
preceding night, were murdered.
On reaching tlie spot, the most dreadful spcctn.
cle was presented. Gartner, who appears to have
been decoyed out of the house, was found partial
ly thrown into a lime-kiln, his bend litcrnlly beaten
to fragments with a rail, which was picked up
close by with all the horrid marks of the use that
had been made of it.
On entering the lmu.se, Mr. Parke was found in
his bed dead, with his throat cut from car to ear.
I fin sister, Mrs. Cart nor, and the infant al her side!
in tho same manner murdered, und a little son of
four or fivo years old stabbed in several places—
and only not dead.
There were two elder children, but they slept
in a distant part of the bouse—unknown, probubiy.to
•.it!! murderers, and most fortunately, they were not
awakened oy tho deeds of hell perpetrating below,
und therefore gave no indication of their presence,
and only knew they were orphans when going in ino
morning to receive their mother's accustomed
kiss.
The house was rifled completely, but what amount
of plunder was obtained no one could yc*. conjec
ture.
Tlie news spread rapidly, the country is raised,
and handbills are already circulating in nil dircc.
lions, offering, in the name of the surviving rela
tives, one thousand dollars fur the arrest and con.
viction of tho murderers.
Plunder, undoubtedly, was tho motive, and uni.
versa! opinion ascribed the horrid deeds to strangers,
who must lmvo come from a distance.
As there must have been two or three concerned,
the hope seems reasonable that a clue will he found,
ami duo punishment be awarded to this unparalleled
massacre.

Western Emigration.—Here is a paragraph,
taken from tite Cincinnati Gazette, that gives one
some idea of emigrating west :
Itis n curiosity to see our steamers sometimes
when full. They appear often as if they were
mnilo for tho same purpose as Noah's Ark. The
Goddess of Liberty, in a late trip to St. Louis look,

with passengers, liorses, cattle, hogs, dogs, furni

men, women and children, or more than sixty
horses ami hogs, about 170 dozen chairs, 40 wa
gons and carriages, about 400 tons frieght in the
steamboat, ami a freighted keel boat in tow. A
child was born on the passage, seven pigs, and a
calf! So much for emigrating west.
Black Sea Wheat.—S. W. Jewett, of Vermont,
says : “For three or more years, this variety of
of wheat has been cultivated in this vicinity, and
with universal success. 1 liavo seen grain select
ed from the most rank and lodged portions of the
field, litres bed separate, and the yield was about
one bushel to the shock , in fuel, it has invariably
given a good return, from 20 to 40 bushols to the

kind of grain with us is, that it never failed of
yielding a good return, and in most cases a large
