'cask cf Seduction.—A Father’s Revenge.— Ourciiv was thrown into a state of excitement yes- I y a tragic occurrence between Mr. E Ford and fastiiuniel W. Low, an auctioneer on tho cor- 0#r of Main and Walnut streels. It appears from evidence elicited in an examination yesterday that Low, by a promise of marriage, succeeded in pur- suadi'ne her to elope from her father’s house; that he tent her to New Orleans, and some days after follow, edher. On last Monday, on his return from New. Orleans,he left her at St. Genevieve, and on Thurs. day arrived along in this city. The father learned these facls and immediately sol forth in search of Itetr aeducer. From the period of her leaving home up to • the time of the fatal occurrence, he had not ceased to search for her—had employed others to aid him., and in a frenzied state continually raved about his daughter. He suspected Low. His suspicions were confirmed, and it drove him to a state of mud. ness. lathis excited state, he, yesterday, in company wilh a friend, visted the office of Mr. Low, and requested a private interview. Mr.L. complied ; and on the parties abjourned to his lodging apart, meat, Ford inquired where his daughter was 7— Low answered “that if he came on that business lie had better clear out.” Ford then remarked that he (Low) had promised to marry her, and by that promise had succeeded in ruining her; that she wai enciente, and he wished to know if he intended to fulfill his promise? The witness states that Low told tho farther to“go to hell.” He, the wit. nes9, on hearing angry words commence betweon them, stepped towards tho door, and, when he turned around observed Ford standing up with a pistol ill hand. Ford repeated the question—“Will you marry my daughter 7” Low again told him to"go to hell." and the exasperated father fired the pistol. Low was sealed at the timo he received the wound. The ball entered nearly in tho centerofhis forehead , making a ghastly, and it is believed, a fata I wound. Mr. Ford made no effort to escape, but yieldec 1 himself up, and desired to be conducted to the lie. corder’s office. He spoke in a cool and collected manner about the affair, and, on his examination, yes. lerday afternoon, exhibited the same calm determi. nation to abide the consequences. Low is a young man about thirty years of ago , and has for some time resided in this city, persuing the buisiness of an auctioneer. The fact of Mary Ford being in company with Low, and criminal intercourse having existed fot tome time between them, is a matter upon which, it appears no doubt is expressed, nor is it denied by the wounded man ; but under what circumstances ■uch intercourse was commenced is a subject upon which we can throw no light. The farther examination of Mr. Ford was deferr. ed last evening until the certainty of Mr. Low’s fate is ascertained, and bail required and given in the sum of $5000. We learn from one of the at. tending physicianslast evening that the patient was gradually sinking from his wound. Anderson, agent, twenty-seven 44-100 uollurs, for the within Execution and cost on the same. W. B. JOHNSTON & CO. New Orleans, July 17. I.ater from Mexico. By the ship Vistula, from Vera Cruz, whence she suited some days ago, wo learn that the fir.l act of tho Mexican Congress, at their extra .e.iion, wus to pass a law lor raising $4,000,000 for the campaign against Texas. General Canalizo ha. been appointed commander-in>chief, and General Woll second in command of the army, which is to consist of 00,000 men. A large amount of the munitions of war &c. ordered from tho United .Stales and England, has been received at Vera Cruz; and it was believed that as soon os it could be forwarded and distributed at the proper points, the whole army would he put under marohiug or. ders. Our Charge d’Affuiresad interim in Mexico, Mr. Greon, we observo, has had another tilt at arm. in the diplomatic way w ith Mr. Bocancgra, llteMexi* can Minister of Foreign Adairs. We IrauslutcQ paragrph from Mr. G’s note; “The undersigned must be permitted to odd,. that lie considers tho notes of his excellency, Mr. Bocanegra, undei dates of the 30lh May and 0th June, discourteous and altogether unwarranted.— l'lte charges of usurpation, of atrocity, of bad faith and violation of treaties, so frequently repeated by his excellency, and the fierce and offensive insinua tions, contained in the part of his excellency’s note which commences with those words, ‘Experience has confirmed,’ &ca., are as reprehensible, a. they ure gratuitous and unfounded, and the undersigned hopes that they will not be repeated, lie has ex. press orders from his Government, given on a for mer occussion, but applicable in tho present in. stance, to state to Mexico that he can hold no com munication with Iter, but in terms of that courtesy and respect which are due to tho honor and dignity of the United Slates. The undersigned cannot admit that either he or his government have com mitted any offence against Mexico. By no means, that they* have done it intentionally. And neither does lie wish that Mexico should pass over in «i. lenco a supposed injury. If Mexico believe that she lias rights over Texas, or that these right* Imvo been violated, tho United States are always disposed and ready to listen to her reclamation, ami to reiiderjustica. They are also equally ready to defend their proper rights against any opposes, let him come from wliat point he may. ‘'The language of representation will ever beat, tended to by the American people or Government. But threats and outrnges avail but little in altering their views, whou their rights are clear, as in the present case, to treat with Texas as an independent power.” Air. Bocanegra replies, sustaining the position taken by Mexico, and denying the want of courtesy to tire United States. “The treaty of amity, navi- gation, commerce, &cc. between the United Slates uud Mexico, ratified in 1832, he repeats, contain* clear and distant clauses. The tenor of each arti cle shews that the frank, sincere and durable friend, ship mentioned, were not abstract phrases or gen eral terms ; hut they should be viewed as binding or obligatory not only on the Governments of the two Republics, isolated and distinct from their re. spective citizens, but also that litis friendship should be reciprocal between the two Governments and the citizens. It is clear, therefore, that the obli. gations contracted and agreed upon in tho treaties, and tho conduct, observed and practised thus far by the United Slates in the disagreeable affair of Texas, are not in unison, and that on their part the stipulations Imvo not been complied with.”' Gouzulo Ulloa, commandant general of Marine at Vera Cruz, lias received the appointment of Commodore of the Mexican squadron. According to letters from Mazatlan, dated 1st June, it appears that tho Captain of Her Britannic Majesty’s corvetlo Champion, is accused of in. fringing on tlio maritime rights of Mexico in the Gulf uf California, by forcibly liberating a British hark taken on llto charge of smuggling. Tito castle ufSau Juan do Ulloa at Vera Cruz, has been put in a complete state of defonco, (so say tite papers) and amply provided for any emergency that inuy occur.—Bulletin MtnDEit.—Wo learn from an Ohio paper that tiiis important dye and drug is now about to be cuU limled in the deep rich soil of that Slate. A far mer on the Vurmillion river in Erie county has gone into its cultivation and found it much more profitable tlmu corn or uny other crop. He culti- tivated in his intervale or bottom land. The con sumption of this dyo m llto Kustern States, where it is used by Calico printers, to produce the moat brilliant and durable colors is already immense— Tite quuntity even uow is estimated at 9 or 10 mil lion pounds, which at 20cts. per lb. would amouul to near iwo million of dollars. This might be clear gain.
