THE KISS AND THE TEAR.
When I first saw the tear in thy soul-telling eve,
I’d have kissed it nwny had not others hecn by;
But the happy and heartless wen* laughing around,
And the gem of pure feeling fell cold to the ground.
As we lingered to part where the pale moon-beams shone,
With a heart-thrilling rapture to love only known,
I deemed that naught earthly could add to my bliss,
Till thy tear’s soft enchontmeut was lost in thy kiss.
With blessings alike so transcendency dear,
Could I tell ifl loved best tho kiss or the tear ?
Did I swear for tlie one, I’d lie false to mv oath;
Be it thus, than, mine own one ! oh giv <•. give me both !

The Swiss Cantons and the Jesuits.—We find the
following .lateraetil of the division of the Cantons on
the subject of the expulsion of the Jesuits.
Those insisting upon the expulsion, are Bern, Zurich,
Valid, ArgovSa, Tess’um, Thurgovia, Grisons, Soleure,
Bhafibntle, Glaris, Bale in tlie country, which is a half
canton. These ten cantons and a ball' have a pnpula.
lion of 1,002 500, furnish to the Federal army a contin.
gent of JO,000 men. a id In the Treasury 572,000 francs.
The cantons of St. (jail and Geneva, and tho half
canton of the city of Bale, are opposed to the Jesuits—
but only desire that a request for theii expulsion shall
he made to Lucerne.
The population of tln-se two cantons and a half is
803.000, their contingent to the army 4155 indii, and to
the ’1 ‘reasury, 141.000 .'i a new.
The cantons opposed to the expulsion, or that desire
to invite Jesuits, are Lucerne, Fribourg, Valais, Neuf.
cbatel, Srliwrz, Oulerualdon, Nuz, Wie, Apperzal,
(exterior,) which is a half canton. •
These eight and a half cantons furnish to tho army
• contingent of 13,500 men, and to tiio Trcasmy of
150,000 francs.
The Jesuits, therefore havo a great majority against
thorn —t ut it will bo difficult, nevertheless,"to "route
their holy phalanxes. —,V. Y. C'our.
Singular Coincidence.—\Ve noticed under this hp.ad
some days since, the fact of the ship, Clyde mid Mer.
chant sail mg from this port on the saute day, one for
Havrr, tho other for L verp ol, and on their return
again, cross tho bar together—neither vessel havimr
•eon each other during the voyage. A similar incidcnT,
wo learn from a correspondent, lias occurred at Mobile.
The ship Franconia, Capt. Jones, bound to Havre, ami
the ship Paclolus, Capt. Hard• n, for Liverpool, crusted
Mobile Bar in company, on thu S'h January last, and on
the r return, ctenoid the Bar again m company on .the
13 h inst. They parted comp my soon after leaving the
Btr, bound out, an J n’uvor again saw each otherT till
they mot as above stated. In our former paragraph we
ventured tho assertion that such an occurrence might
uot happen again iniialf acentn y. We now think it
doubtlul if two such remarkable coincidences occurs
again in a century.—Sav. Rep.
The Dismal Swamp.—A friend informs us that the
recent fire in the Swamp lias driven from their hiding
places a large number of runaway slaves wlm have, m
many cases, been secreted for years. An old black wo
men being burnt nut of her capacious home, sought out
end claimed her master; and, in addition to this'Velurn
of property, she brought with her eleven children, nil
her own, serving as an indemnity or remuneration for
her long absence. Any quantity of bears, foxes, and
other animals, already roasted, is to bu found ; and all
that a hungry man has to do is to hie to tho smoking
meats and satiate his appetite.
St.AVEKV in Mississippi—Homo of tho papers havo
been asserting that tho law passed a year nr two since,
III million to introduction of slaves into Mississippi,
forbad*ever nimgran'e from carrying slaves there.-.
'i'liis is a mistake- The Secretary of Siato of that
K'ate, lias just published a letter on the subject, tit
which ho says ; ••The Constitution fully guarantees
the bringing of .laves into the Stain by emigrants, and
lias prohibited the legislature from ever restraining
aucii liberty.”
