ELECTION OP 8TATJ5 PRINTER.
On Priday last both breaches of the Legislature
proceeded to the etoctien of Stele Printer, end on the
3d bellot Col Grieve wee elected. The billots wees is
followe: ....
M. Grieve, (of the Recorder,) 77 81 88
T. M. Griffln, (Federal Union,) 83 71 dr’n
J. R. Smith, (for Sanderaville Telescope,) 10 17 84
Scattering, 3
Blank, 18 3
As will be seen, Colonel Grieve received about
nine-tenth* of. tho Whig party, on the 1st ballot—and
on the 3d ballot nine-tenths of the Democrats voted for
Mr. Smith, on account of it* being openly avutved on
the Democratic side of the House, that one half of the
printing would be given to one Democratic paper, (the
Augusta ConatitutraraUet) if Smith was elected.—
How many other promise* or “arrangements" were
made, for the benefit of Democratio Editors, we know
not. Justice 10 Mr. Smith requires u* to eey. that he
was not present, and was understood as being merely a
nominal candidate. Mr. Wart, a Representative from
Washington, and therefore Constitutionally inelligible,
wasithe reel ceodidate, through whom, it ie presumed,
“the arrangement” was made.
