SAVANNAH NATIONAL REPUBLICAN. TUESDAY MORNING. OCTOBER 24c i
I>QE TRY
...
Lo ! lazy Summer, swarthy, in the Ban
lies p«.nring, with bare breasts, upon the
hills,
Swathing her limbs in hazes warm and dun,
Where splendors into dusky splendors ran,
And sultry glory all the heavens o’erfills-
Not a white dimple stirs amid the corn,
Not a low ripple shivers through the leaves;
Since wrapped in gold and crimson gleams un
shorn,
Came, flashing through the east, the regal
morn,
No throated twitterings gargle round the
eaves.
Flooded in rainy silence sleep-the kine ;
In lanquid murmurs brooklets float and
flow;
The quaint farm-gables in the rich light shine,
And round them jasmiaed honeysuckles twine,
And close beside them snn-flowers burn and
blow.
▲mid die growing heat I lie me down,
And into visions swarms the moted air;
Gleams up before me many a famous town,
Pillared and crested with a regal crown
Outshimmering ic an orient purple glare;
Lo 1'Jotylf Tadmo^, burning in its sands-
Baalbeck and Babylon :-T see slow streams
Gliding by mosque and minaret—see the
gleams n
Of seas in sunset—slips of shining strands,
And drowsy Bagdad buried deep in dreams;
Sea swarthy monarchs flushed in purple rings
Of silken courtiers; through half-open doors
Catch the spice-odors, and the cool of springs
Leaping forever, ia a maw of wings—
See light form; d&ucing ■ over pearl_v floors
Sleeping seraglios, spire and tremulous dome
Winking in drowsy splendor all the day,
See forest hannts where thick the lions roam
See thirsty panthers splashed in bloody foam
Leap terrible as lightnings on their prey ;
stand with Cortez on a mountain peak
Above the Aztec city, see unrolled.
Gem-threaded shores of Montezuma weak—
See the white temples swarming thick and
sleek,
And sunny streets stretch up by towers of
gold;
See silken sails float by, ambrosial,
Laden with spices up a Persian glen:
Or stand on Lebanon, ’mid the cedars tall,
Or hear the soft and silver fall
Of water down a jut of Darien.
But lo! a waking shiver in the trees, *
And voices ’mid the hay-cocks in the glen
The sun is setting; and the crimson seas
Are shaken into splendor by the breeze,
And all the busy world is up again !

MlifROPOLITM
ORIGIN OF THE NAME OK THE FLOWER.
Two lovers, on a summer eve,
Roamed for a cooling shade,
Where swaying branches overhead
Concealed a forest glade.
Anon a river wound its way,
Whose banks were green' and bright;
The maid espied a lonely flower,
And, gazing, blest the sight.
In memory of that happy hoar
She hailed the lonely boon,
And bade her lover gam for her
The favorite floweret soon.
He sought and gained the beauteous flower.
Then in the river fell;
Their parting token was the gift
Of him she loved too well.
Calmly he met the angel Death,
Ne’er mourned hi/hapless lot;
But, gazing on the maid, he cried,
Farewell, “Forget me uot.”
‘ Nigger on a Wood Pile."
When I first began to go to New Orleans, Jake
Crabb, about the blackest sample of ebony this
side of the Gold coast, was almost always a
member of oj»r stevedore gang, and as Jake
could handle a cotton bale, h gsbead of tobacco,
or tierce-of bacon a trifle handier than any other
stevedore in New Orleans, was the best "chsunt-
er” for a gang, and was always chock full of
orginal fun, everybody along the levee knew
him, and Jal;e was a universal favorite among
everybody. •
Jake had saved money, and one day be bought
himself out and went into business. Not steve
doring—J ike could do better than that. He
took to grave digging; and as a New Orleans
grave is two and a half fset deep, price four dol
lars, Jafce could do up twelve a day, and during
the yellow fever and oholera seasons, he was
overran with business, absolutely coining money.
But his avocation, was periodical. Jaok Frost
always killed Yellow, Jack and black Jake’s en
terprise very dead for a tima. Then Jake would
"be despondent till harvest time came around
again. He was obliged then to “cut into his
pile,” as he called it.
One fall, just at the commencement of Jake’s
dull season our ship dropped in alongside one of
piers at Lafayette, and about the first live thing
I discovered on shore was Jake Crabb, perched
on top of a stave. pUe fifteen feet high, dangling
his legs and looking as forlorn as a superannuated
owl. *
“Halloa there, Jake, how are yon ? How do
you weather it!”
"Moitee bad, massar mate—moitee bad. now
I told ye. Cuttin at the pile, sar, cuttin at de
pile.
“Why, what’s the trouble, Jake ?”
“I tol# ye massar mate, de faek am, dey
doant die fas* a nuff, dey doam die fass a-noff.
sar." ’

through your library, and when you cast your
eyes upon a volume that contains the name of an
old companion it will tee, Remember me. Have

crowded churchyard, among the marble tombs,
read the simple and brief inscriptions that per
petuate the memory of departed ones; they too
hare a voice that speaks to the heart of the living,
and says, Remember me. Welkin the scenes of
early ramble-; the well-known paths of the wind
ing streams, the overspread trees, the green and
gentiy sloping banks, recall the dreams of juven-
tie pleasure, and the recollections of youthful
companions; they too beer the treasured injuac-

National Wit,
Italian wit is highly dramatic, spontane
ous, genial. Among its proverbs are—“The dog
earns bis living by wagging his tail." “Make
yourselves all honey, and the fiieswill devour H.”
"The smiles of a pretty woman are tears of the
purse." "He who takes an eel by the tail, or a
woman by the tongue, is sure to eome off empty
handed." v 1
The characteristic of Spanish wit is exeersivs
stateliness. Of their proverbs—“He who has
nothing to do, let him buy a ship or marry a
