.POETRY.
Ode to my New Bonnet.
Soft triangle ot straw and lace
That curves around my blushing face
With such a coy, bewitching grace,
Ho mortal man would dream your place
Was on my head,
Y our airy touch can scarcely press,
The shape from curl to flowing tress.
So light, so next to nothingness,
You surely could not well De less
And be a bonnet.
A bit of straw adorned with leather,
A yard of lace, a spray ot heather,
Some bugles and a tossing feather,
These trifles shaken all together—
Thus were you made.
No cape with starchy netting lined,
No buckram crown projects behind;
But streamers flutter in the wind
There flows, in silken mesh confined,
My water-tall.
Yet most your dainty form I prize,
As sweeping back above mine eyes
It lets the drinkled hillocks rise,
Where underneath in ambush lies
My pair of mice.
But when rough Autumn winds sweep past,
And all your laces shake aghast
Then can you shield me from the blast,
And round my neck a shelter cast
To keep me warm ?
Alas, a summer triend are you,
And only kind while skies are blue ;
I long have known the saying true—
Old friends are better than the new
When trouble comes.
Bo ere the dog-day heats be lied,
Let me your flimsy glories spread ;
For soon as Winter whistles dread
I’ll tie once more about my head
My old scoop bonnet.

Burning op the Cocntt Jail.—The old jail of
Bibb county, which has for years been a terror to
criminals, is in ashes. At lour o’clock yesterday
morning the sentries around it discovered smoke
issuing from the third story windows, and
promptlvj gave the alarm. The oflicer of the
guard at once ordered all on duty at the door,
and the doors of the cells to be opened—every
one of which contained one or more prisoners,
either charged or convicted of violation of law.
Owing to the self-possession and coolness of
Lieut. Geo. B. Walker the inmates were filed
out, and safely conducted to the adjoining lot,
and not one escaped.
By this time, the alarm was given at the
engine houses, and their bills were ringing. All
the companies quickly assembled on the ground
and poured volumes oi water upon the then ap
parently doomed bnilding. But in three hours
hard work the flames were subdued, and nearly
extinguished. In another half hour they might
haveoeen wholly extinguished and everything
saved, except the roof and the third story; but
for some strange and inexplicable reason, the en
gines were ordered hack to their houses at seven
o’clock. The fire was left free to rekindle and
take its course. All morniug. and until eleven
•o' clock, it burned op, when at that time, the sec
ond alarm was given. It was too late. Compa
nies Xoa. & and 3 again repaired to the burning
building and exerted all their energies to get the
flames under control, but without avail. The
jail burned until no more wood could be found
for the fire to consume. As it stood somewhat
isolated from any other bnildiDg, nothing else
was ignited. The works of the Macon gas com
pany are in close proximity, but fortunately they
did not take tire,
The jail has always been considered a very
poorly constructed and unsafe ailair, but it origi
nally cost the county about $S,0J0, upon which
thete was no insurance.
There is no doubt that some of the prisoners
set the building on fire. At the time we left
the premises, they were still under guard in the
court house yard, and we are unable to state
what disposition is to be made of them. The
city has a guard house on Third street, but it
is not large enough to accommodate the de
mands now made upon it.—Macon Telegraph,
‘22d.
Freight to New York.—A prominent
buyer informs us that he can now ship cotton
to New York for four cents per pound. When
we consider that it is selling here from 47a50
and 60a65 in New York, with 4 cents thrown
off for freight, -the margin in favor of the buyer
is handsome indeed.—Ibid.
s^Foisoned by Accident.—We understand
that two children of Mr. Killingswortb, on the
Milledgeville road, three miles from this city,
were accidentally poisoned on Monday by the
administering of strychnine for quinine- One
of the children, a boy ot about eight or ten
years old, died in a few minutes. The other,
a babe, still languishes, with little hope of re
covery. It seems that this medicine had been
in the house for some time, and was wrapped
in a paper marked quinine.—Chronical Sen
tinel, 24 th.

Disturbance—Secret Session.
Philadklphia, Monday, Oat. 16, 1865.
An informal meeting of the Fenian Congress
was held to»day at the Assembly Buildings
About 600 delegates were present. The ohair-
man delivered an address, bat the Congress will
not be organized for business until to-morrow.
This evening an enthusiastic mass meeting was
held in the large hall of the Assembly Buildings,
which was largely attended by ladies and gentle
men. Excellent speeches were delivered in favor
of the oause by Capt. Welch-of this city, Mr.
Morrison of Chicago,«nd others. Much enthu
siasm was manilested. A couple of persons
attempted to disturb the meeting by remarks
obnoxious to the assemblage, but were quiokly
hustled out of the hall. The Congress will be in
session daring the week, and its proceedings will
be of a highly important oharaoter. The session

associate the idea or operations upon the bowels from
taking any kind of pills. The Srcon-to of Dr. Rand is
not intended as an xtaouatiks xkdigike. Its medici

the taste, and many persons masticate them with Im

always recommend, as affording the speediest way to
