We learn from Mr. Cantwell, the agent of the
aohoonor W illie Dill, at Hilton Head, that the
schooner, which arrived at that port on Sunday
last, picked op, off Charleston on Friday last, and
carried into Port Royal, a boat containing twen
ty-three of the passengers and crew of the steam
ship Republic, bound from New York to New
Orleans. _ y
The Republic left New York on Wednesday,
, October 18th, at 3 o’clock, p- m., with 72 passeu-.
gers, and sunk in the latitude of Savannah, soon
after the paeseDgers and crew left her.
Pour boats left the vessel, and the boat picked
up by the Willie Dill was the last to leave, and is
the only one hesrd from. They were three day3
in the boat, and their small allowance of bread and
water had given out. The passengers saved say
the Republic was the old steamer Tennessee, and
was totally unfit for a sea voyage. She was
chartered on this trip by Messrs. Cromwell A Co.,
and belonged to Messrs. Sturgis A 'Co., of New
York.
The merchants at Hilton Head showed much
sympathy for the distressed passengers, and a
handsome subscription was immediately raised to
alleviate their wants. The passengers returned
North by the steamer Guiding Star, which vessel
put into Hilton Head a day or two since in dis
tress.
The steamer Empire City started in search of
the missirg boats.
The following is a list of the persons picked
up by the Willie Dili:
Passengers—Capt. JIawtborn, wife and two
children, Thos. Fleming, Jas. M. Harvey, Mrs
Caroline Waldron, Hiram F. Fianders, Judge
John E. 8and?trom, of New Orleans ; Mr. Lenoir
and M ss Lenoir.
(/'■etc—Jas. Muldrow, 1st Engineer; John
Gardner, 2J Engineer: Aug. Shylock,2d Steward;
Amos Poo! store-keeper; Abraham Lyons, Wm.
Perry, Pat. Harley, NVh. Diiohman, Jno Caffrey,
Pat. Ncodnam, Wm. Porter, James Lte.
Thanks, gentlemen, for this most ac
ceptable souvenir of your regard for our
principles, and rest assured we need tlie
soothing influence of music to drown the
harsh sounds of profanity that too often
grate upon our ears from'polluted lips
that never know what it is to lisp truth
and magnanimity towards those of their
fellow men who may ineel and worship at
a different altar, or differ with them po
litically. Now that the mighty conflict is
ended, and the fierce din and tumult of
the fraticidal strife has ceased throughout
our native land, it is sweet and pleasing
to be lulled into pleasant meditations by
the sacred inspiration of music. Furl up
your tattered and gory banners, blaoken-
ed with the smoke of many battles, and
while the sound of the Dead March in
Saul is hushed, give us the harmonious
vespers of gentle peace, and while tec
of ideas goes on, mete out the merry P e ^ ®
of peace from out brazen throats and fill
the human heart with peaceful emotions
and when the staunch ship shall bear
away your serried ranks to happy homes
in the far Pine Tree State, may our ears
be able to catch the last symphonies that
shall mingle with the music 6f the waters.
Touch your magic keys and fill our
hearts with gladness for ;peace and for
giveness for our bitter enemies. Thrill
the souls of the unrelenting with your
electric power and bid them forgive and
forget. Sound the timbrel of fraternal
love, and let the evening breeze breathe
peace to the tired souls of angry men.
No more frowning pSrapets to storm, no
ramparts to scale, no guns to silencdl save
the batteries of General Discontent. Gar
land your helmets, and as the sun sails
through the sapphire sea at sunset, unroll
your power and sound a requiem for the
unnumbered dead of our whole glorious
country.

The “Lizzie Baker” is as swift as ele
gant, having made the round trip from
New York to Charleston in the remarka
bly short space of time of 58 hours, and
even then the' full power of her engines,
which are 300 horse power, were not
tested. Captain Richardson commands
this proud little water witch, and is too
well known to require any mention at oui
hands, but we do not hesitate to say that
liis reputation as a skilful and courteou*
officer will be maintained. Purser Elijah
Brainard is an educated gentleman, and
by his refined and modest address can
not fail to win hosts of friends. And now
a word of praise for the enterprising
agents, Messrs. Claghorn & Cunningham,
of this city, whom, we are glad to learn,
have been appointed agents. This firm
will give success to any line that they
take hold of if there is business enough

there will be nothing “hoggish” in the

Captain Joseph Blankenship, of the bark
Horace Beals, arrived at this port yesterday
from New Yatk, has kindly furnished us with
the following report: On the 26ih inst, about
20 miles east of Hunting Island, picked up a
boat belonging to the steamship Republic,
from New York for New Orleans, and whiclj
went down on Thursday of last week. There
were thirteen persons in the boat when picked
up by the Beals, who were without water, and
had been fifty hours in the open boat buffeting
about tbe angry waves. They were in a very
destitute condition, having saved nothing but
what they had on their persons. Captain Blan
kenship did every thing in his power to render
their situation as comfortable as possible, and
on Sunday afternoon transfered them to
tbe steamer General Hooker, off Tybee. The
General Hooker reported having picked up
the Captain’s boat.

Serenade.
Owing to the crowded state of our col
umns yesterday morning, we were reluc
tantly compelled to omit returning our
sincere thanks to the leader and members
ot'.tlie fine brass band attached to the
12th Maine Regiment for the splendid
aud timely serenade with which they hon
ored us on Saturday evening. The com
pliment, we understand, was paid to this
journal as a mark of approbation for the
honesty and independence that has char
acterized the course of the National Re-
publican in dealing with all questions, and
also in retaliation for the brutal and un
provoked assault made upon tbe proprie
tor of the National Republican by three
cowardly sneaks last week.
The evening was a charming moon
light one, with a slight tireeze blowing,
sufficient to waft the soft strains of de
lightful Nocturnes over the sluggish and
turbid waters of the Savannah river.
Quite a large crowd of music-lovers gath
ered on the Bay to listen to the enraptur-
iugjnotes of a delightful Pastorale or the
proud swelling notes of our National an
thems. “America” wiys given with line
and thrilling effect, while our hearts were
saddened with the pfaintive, spirit-wan
dering echoes of “Departed Days,” as
they sailed aloft in the bright moonlight,
lingered awhile in the silent trees, and
then died away mournfully among the
marshes of Hutchinson’s Island. There
are few Nocturnes written that portray
more ideality of departed day., hours,
spirits, glories and sorrows than the
soul-movingieomposition, “Departed
Days,” reca^jp&) our mind the sounds
and reminiscences of “Monastery Bells”
