Hush the loud-rolling drum ! .
Waves erst "bright blue, with dots of shining
gold, • , :
O’er blood-tinged battle rocks too long have
rolled
Death’s tides, so swift to come.
Silence the bugle’s call'!
The tiercelets sated with thNir festive days,
Hover all grime above the furrowed ways
, Sowed deep with iron ball.
Sheathe the war-blunted sword!
The eager hand, that clutclffed so fiercely tight
That blade, whose soul-pure steel Hashed sil
ver bright,
Its last strength has outpoured.
In compliance with par. 3, of Circular

ROYAL AND RUSTIC.
BT HIRAM RICH.
Your queen sits arrayed in imperial purple,
While" flatterers fawn at her indolent leet.
Yet mine is as fair in her unadorned ratment-
Her heart is .as warm and her presence as
sweet.
Yonr
quean hath her castles in spring-time
and autumn—• ~ . ...
slave-tended daffodils
Her gardens where
bloom, ... , _ .
But mine trains the vine with the tenderes
fingers—
Ah! the dantiest roses unfold m her room.
Your
q UeC n hath the fleetest and proudest of
litiV luo , • L ^
Silk-pennoned, but steeled in the might of
their pride;
Mine hath hut a shallop, though light as a
lily , • i ,
Or dream painted blossom it graces the tide.
I doubt not your queen bath inherited glory,
Anon it will fall to one regal as she;
fMjrnc will deepen the purple that darkens the
chancel,
- While some will declare whose her sceptre
shall Jie.
My queen hath her own uni nherited glory,
Ah! ne’er to be worn by one regXl as she ;
Fair maidens will meet in the blush of the
sunset,.
Too sad to think, “whose will her diadem
be?” • . .

Touch us, ob, Time, with light hand as you
pass,
Tempt us to think it a loving caress ;
Tread on our hearts, too, with reverent care—
Crush not the fbwers of life blooming there ;
Furrow our foreheads with care if you will,
But let youth linger within our hearts still.
’Mid our dark tresses are fibres of gray—
Bilent reminders of life’s fleeting day ;
And when we turn to the shadowy past,
Ou its bright altars lay ashes and dust;
All its fair idols are marked with decay—
All its sweet pictures are faded away.
Sadly ye look for the friends of the past—
They of stroDg heart and the beautiful trust ;
Some we find sleeping beneath sculptured
stone;
Some toiling wearily onward alone;
Some thro’ambition grown heartless and cold,
But one aim all, save thodead, growing old.
Oft we grow weary in watching in vain,
O’er hopes that always but shadows remain;
Weary of counting the joys that have died ;
Weary of laying bright visions aside;
Weary of taking but dross for pure gold ;
Weary, so weary, of hearts growing old. ^
Chase from us, Time, ail shadowy fears,
Lift from our lives the slow burden of years;
Shadow our foreheads and silver our hair,
But, oh, shield our hearts from the furrows of
care.
Let not the heart grow selfish or cold,
And we shall no longer fear to grow old.
’fhe Steamer Gen. Berry—Correction
We stated in a late issue of our paper, upon
the authority of an attache of the Express
Company, that the steamer Berry had sus
tained such injuries in’a collision with the
steamer Helen as to necessitate a discharge of
her cargo and return to Savannah.
A gentleman informs ns that the statement
was incorrect. The Berry's injuries have
been repaired, and Bhe is now at Hershman’s
Lake awaiting a rise in the river.
Xlie steamer Oak is at the same place.
