swindling the City.
n our travels through the city of late we
, ine t quite a large number of itinerant
,| jr . .,vho are annoying onr citizens by press-
. then* to buy merchandize of a questiona
bly. These pedlars perambulate our
.. t0 ji,p 0 se of their goods, and in all cases
r( ,e an exorbitant price for inferior articles,
obtaining an immense profit, while the
ae.-t merchant, who transacts a legitimate
aurs, it compelled to pay enormous rents,
ft j j, very propel ly taxed to help defray the
■nicnral expenses necessary for the mainte-
BL e of the city.
B l liere is so much gross injustice in tolera-
i , these unlicensed pedlars to rob our honest
1 chants of trade which justly belongs to
■ ;:ii, that we trust our citizens will not only
E;i. r w purchase goods from pedlars, but we
I i;c the aiil of our vigilant police to ferret
5. tb whereabouts of the imposters. A few
E-,would have a wholesome effect upon
ft . e worthless members of society, who con-
si ,ut,: liitle or nothing to the general welfare
if: mr city, and we shall be glad to chronicle
first example that is made of these defraud-
Bindividuals. The city treasury is in an
Hipovensiicd condition, and we can suggest
B better way to enrich it than to make a pro-
| irihlc haul of these pedlars, and impose a suffr-
Htntly heavy fine to deprive them of all
H. tr ill gotten gains.

LIST OF VESSELS IN THE PORT OF
SAVANNAH.
Arrival of the Leo.
B The ficaoisbip Lao, Capt. Merrill, from Now
H rk. arrived at her wharf yesterday morning.
I.e liri.igs a very heavy freight and a large num-
■rof passengers. The Leo comes consigned to
ft "uavus Cohen, who will hereafter act as the
ia this oily of the Pioneer Line. Mr. Cohen
ft. me of our oldest merchants, and has a high
ftr:motion as a business man of muoh experience
m 1 strict integrity. The line cannot fail of
ft.-c.'S imdir tbe management of Mr. Cohen.
I " c aro indebted to the Purser, Mr. Slocum, for
■nor.', but would be still further indebted to him
Rod to other pursers, if they would furnish du
ll mitt copies of their freight and passenger lists,
I which we would bo saved a great deal of time
lad tr eble in oopying them off. Before the
■nr. z ■ -uch difficulty was experienced, but im-
■:t Intel; on the arrivaf of the steamships, oor-
It " e- pies of the consignees and passengers were
I 'Dobed to the several papers, and we can see
g.j good reason why the same coarse could not
formed now. We hope this matter will re
ft re tbe consideration of the gentlemanly pur-
fttMifihe steamships arriving at this port, who
le ever aroommodating and obliging to us and
B e public generally.
Decidedly Unfair.
B 1 he circus company of Stone, Rosston i Mur-
H’ is * very fine equestrian establishment, and
Bell worth seeing, but our citizens onmpiain at
Kt “1 mkee dodge” of giving a very little circus
ft tr, and a too liberal supply of exaggerated
■T9 nonsense for an additional fee at the same
■soruiance. Abolish negro minstrels, Messrs,
•leasers, and our people will support you hand.
Rnei; Kspend.the minstrel time in equestrian-
m r - and we will welcome the improvement.
I . Dead Body Found,
■ me remains of a colored man was found
k'i )g in the river yesterday afternoon. It
Bp towed to the wharf opposite the Gas
ftg’’Us. A coroner has been summoned, and
Rf inquest will be held on the body. The
BS has, no doubt, been in the river $>out a
ft n jht, as it was in a state of decomposition
H’-rn di-covered.
From Charleston.
B The steamer Fannie, Capt. McNelty, arrived
yesterday from Charleston, with quite a
er of passengers. We are indebted to Capt.
■hXelty for late Charleston papers.
Tse Fannie is intended to run between this
: and Jacksonville, and other points in Flori-
I 1 * snd Georgia. Capt. MoNelty is well and fa*
ra, i; known in this city as a commander of
- a; 3 experience and gentlemanly qualities. She

LETTER FROM MR. BARNUM.
NEW YORK, July 14,1S66.
Messrs. Herrin<j <y Co. :
Gentlewen—Though the destruction of the Ameri
can Museum has proved a serious loss to myself and
the public, I am happy to verify the old adage, that,
‘It’s an ill wind that blows nobody good,” and conse
quently, congratulate you that your well-known safes
have again demonstrated their superior fire-proof
qualities in an ordeal of unusual severity.
The safe you made for tne some time ago was in the
office of the Museum, on the second floor, back part of
the building, and in the hottest of the fire.
After twenty-four hours of trial it was fouud among
the debris, and on opening it this (lay has yielded up
its contents in very good order-books, papers, poli
cies of insurance, bank hills, alt in condition Jor Imme
diate use, and a noble commentary on the trustworthi
ness of Herring’s Fire-Proof Safes.

T HE undersigned takes pleasnre lu announcing to
its old patrons and the public that arrangements
have been nearly perfected by which the “National
American” will be revived in a new and attractive
form, and under very favorable anspicee, in the City of
Atlanta, Georgia, early in the ensuing year.|
The paper was established in 1856, and enjoyed a
patronage and popularity greatly superior to anv of its
city cotemporaries np to January, 1861, when it was
discontinned in consequence of the secession of Geotg a
from the Union. It will be remembered as a bold and
consistent National Journal—zealously opposing Se
cession and Disunion, and as wsrnt'y advocating the
development of the vast and varied Resources uf the
South—particularly of Georgia; the adoption of a
liberal system of Pnblic Schools and General
Education; an enlightened system of Agriculture ; the
promotion and elevation of the Mechanic Arts; the
establishment of Manufactories, and the encourage
ment of every industrial pursuit calculated to improve
the Minds and Morals of our people and render them
prosperous and happy in the ‘‘Union of onr Fathers.
It will be the aim of its projector and his present As
sociates to sustain, in all its leading features, the well-
earned good name, independence and consistency of
the paper, and to make ft, if possible, even more ac
ceptable and popnlar than in it s hitherto palmiest days.
The paper wiU in no wise belie its past prond record.
It will continue Union, yet thoroughly Southern in its
tone and character—proscribing no man who did his
duty in tbe troublous past, and fearlessly, yet courte
ously, opposing every measure, par y or clique whose
tenets may be deemed inimical to the peace and pros-
pet ity.of the country at large.
The interest of the Subscriber as well as those ot
the Advertiser will be protected, and every effort made
to make the American a Live and Reliable News,
Political, Commercial and Family Journal.
The National American will be published Daily
and Weekly in the City of Atlanta, and lurnishedto
Subscribers, if by mail, at $10, or by carrier in the city,
at $12 per annum, for the Daily, and $4 for the Weekly
—strictly in advance. C. R. ilANLEITER. ’
