rescuing the officers and crew, notwithstanding

Captain Carpenter, of the steamship Ne
vada, informs us that he saw an English bark
vluire on the Stone Horse, Tybee Bar, with
her mainmast gone. She was abandoned, and
ier sails were unfurled. The bark is evidently
loaded with coal.
lie also reports having seen a hermophrodite
brig at anchor about a quarter of a mile from
the wreck, with her colors set for a pilot.
There is little doubt but that the bark re
ported above went ashore during the heavy
rale which must have prevailed on our coast

Arrival of Steamships.
The steamship Nevada, Captain Carpenter,
Tom New York, arrived at this post yesterday,
bringing a large freight and a full passenger
list.
The steamship Zodiac, Captain Dearborn,
also arrived from New York at an early hour
yesterday. She also has a very full cargo and
brought quite a number of passengers.
The Varuna, Capt. Whitehurst, which left
Jew York on Saturday last, arrived last even-

furors.

GsaTi-ajiKu—Though the destruction of the Ameri
can Museum has proved a serious loss to myself aud
the public, I am happy to verily the old adage, that,
It’S an ill wind that blows nobody good," and conse
quently, congratulate you that your well-known sales
have again demonstrated their superior fire-proof
qualities iu an ordeal of unusual severity.
The safe you made for me some time ago was in the
office of the Museum, on the second floor, back part of
the building, and in the hottest of the fire.
After twenty-four hours of trial it was found among
the debris, and on opening it this day has yielded up
its contents in very good order-books, papers, poli
cies of insurance, bank bills, all in condition.for imme
diate use, and a noble commentary on the trustworthi
ness of Herring's Fire-Proof Safes.
